Flying to southern ireland without a passport

I can't find an answer to this - my girlfriend is American and doesn't currently have a passport but does have a UK driving licence - would she be able to fly to ireland?

Or failing that, ferry?

I have never had to show my passport when visiting Eire to fish. Always took it though just in case.

Entry requirements into Ireland.

As she is not an EU national she may have a problem

Anderoo,

How did she get into the UK - American passport?

In any event I often relied on the information the carrier (airline) gave me. Regardless of the laws that apply you will have to meet their standards anyway. I'd be equally, if not more, concerned about getting home.

Thanks for the replies. She is at the point of getting duel citizenship and has had to turn in her passport for 'some months' as part of that process. It looks like someone born in and a citizen of the UK can fly to Ireland with any photo id but she wouldn't qualify. Not sure about the ferry though? Probably the same?

Almost certainly the same by ferry Aderoo.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
