Hmmm, Sunflower hearts on the bird table in abundance & everything seems to love them, but Niger seeds just get left alone. Do get the occasional Goldfinch but it is getting to be a rare treat.

My birdtable is situated right alongside the upper of my two ponds which is very shallow & at times looks like one giant birdbath!!

So I seem to have the water part of the equation in place & perhaps part of the food needs.

Maybe a dollop of patience is required, incidentally do G/Finches have a particular season where they're most common in the gardens?

Peter, me again :) This only applies to my experience in my garden....

the G/Finches don't seem to feed from my bird feeders, and they def. don't like sharing the pond/stream with other birds.

I spend hours watching and waiting, and they never settle if there are other birds bathing, and shoot off if even a sparrow gets near them, but once you get used to the pattern of arrival, then you do have time to get prepared.

Hope that doesn't sound to pompous :),

hi our flock of goldfinches use the special niger seed feeders most and the sunflower hearts from the feeders....

there are 3 of us feeding the goldfinches( neighbours ) for the last 2 years we have seen their young and the flock is getting bigger....but they seem to prefer the food well away from the house with cover close by

Certainly doesn't Den, & as I have large contingents of Sparrows, Starlings, etc etc visiting the table & pond, it sounds very relevent. Oddly enough there is a reasonable head of Greenfinches visit as well, but they seem to mix okay.

Never mind though, I'll keep an eye out for them & if they don't turn up I'll just have to keep looking at your pics Den

Cheers Judy, My table & pond are well away from the house with some good cover nearby as well.

Judging by what you & Den have posted I seem to have most things covered, except perhaps the patience thing!

Must try harder.

Peter.

Looking through my folders, came across this one, taken 28th May this year. I did put it up then, but found it a bit weak. However, a dramatic re crop, making it much more intence, what do you think?

New, re croped 'Sunset over Shotley'

Original, 'Sunset through the cabin window'

Found that I can go through a whole load of pics, view in Windows, zoom in/out, move the pic around on the sliders, gives a whole new potential image to a dull general photograph?? Saves a lot of time going through the one at a time in photo shop. Obviously the final crop etc is done in PS Elements.

Cliff,

PS an alternative crop, which I quite like, play around like this all day, great fun find 'new pictures' in old shots B)

Tug at 205/206 berth, Southampton Container Port

I always did have a soft spot for tugs, especially the big 'pusher tugs' like we have on the Maas and the Americans have on the Mississippi. This is just a little harbour tug.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
