From the back of a Type 42 Destroyer. We use to catch Bass in Pompey harbour on raw bacon (I kid you not).

Scotty

I must try that. Do you think it was the bacon or the destroyer that was significant?

I think the most significant aspect was where the ship was berthed, deep channels next to the harbour wall with beams and girders everywhere, ideal bass habitat. As for the bacon, when I was duty weekend and couldn't get to the tackle shop I asked the chefs for a few rashers, and hey presto. The first one I caught was after i'd left my rod for about 10 minutes and returned to the quarter deck to see it pivoting on the guardrail about to go over the side, and on the end was a bass of about 3lb . To be honest i've never tried it since having left the Navy some 9 years ago, maybe I should of kept this to myself  :)

From the back of a research vessel off the Antipodean Islands in the Southern Ocean.

We drifted over 600 ft of water whilst a party went ashore by Zodiac.

I saved some cooked prawns from lunch, and tightlined with 10 lb line and 2 oz wt. Only just reached bottom with about ten turns of line left on the reel.

Caught an Orange-Throat Notothen of 4 lb. (and no, I hadn't heard of it before either)

Ship's biologist said it was the biggest he had ever seen, so I logged it as a World Record :D:D:D
