Great "Fishing" TV Programs

The best near miss in my opinion is Total Fishing. There are few gems in there like chub and perch fishing but ruined by each segment being 30 seconds long and that awful guitar music.

I do in general find Matt Hayes very watchable.

I think programme wise APFA, I regard it as being a programme rather than a series even theough there where several episodes.

John Wilsons Go fishing was one of my favourite series along with Bernard Venables and Anglers Corner.

When we were kids, we used to take the mickey out of John Wilson, "I have to be careful with this tiny size 14" when we didn't own anything bigger than a 16! We still loved the show though. Lost a lot of his appeal when he started travelling abroad, though.

Rusty, was it the episode of The Accidental Angler where he tried to find trout in London? Excellent series.

That's a good shout - Charles R-W has written a couple of good books too.

Don't think it was ever broadcast - but still available on DVD is Caught in Time - same production values as APFA - right down to Bernard Cribbens voice (but no Bob James!). Paul Witcher's Four Seasons on the Avon and the 2 DVD set Magical Waters are also a pleasant enough to watch - but again never broadcast as far as I'm aware...

I quite like Jeremy Wade's programmes now he has given up consulting witch doctors !

So many potentially good programmes on exotic locations are ruined by the trite commentary - answer, turn the sound off and concentrate on the ambiance. Robson Green's lot have visited quite a few places Norma and I have fished - without us making a tenth of the noise RG makes ....

Nearer home, APFA still sets the modern standard.

Back in the mists of time, Jack Hargreaves was superb in the "Out of Town" series - an era now lost, although I cling on to any fragments of that life-style that come my way.

Nobody has mentioned "Kite's Country" and one or two programmes featuring Frank Sawyer ... I quite liked them in spite of the elitist flavour..... is anyone here old enough to remember?

...and yes, I remember the original "Fishing Race" won by Jim Gibbinson (one-time poster on AN) and Ian Gillespie. Enjoyed it very much. Subsequent attempts to copy the genre have not even come close.

Plenty of jack on youtube and the full set of PFA as well .

I enjoyed wilson when he wasnt cackling but i dont like any angling in foreign countries whatsoever ,if i am never going to experience it myself it has no interest to me

Cheers chaps, there are a few shows that I have not heard about before such as The fishing Race & Accidental anglers that I am sure I would like and so will keep an eye out for them. Maybe I may be able to locate them on the net.

Does anyone know what happened to Rex Hunt? He had slipped out of my mind until mentioned in this thread, its' been ages since I have seen anything by him on TV.
