AN Fish- in River Test

I’m hoping to find one of those famous roach. Could anyone suggest tactics, so I can decide which gear to bring?

I’m planning on doing some trotting with a match rod and centrepin reel, with 3lb line and a big stick float and bread flake on the hook over a bit of mash, with some maggots if that fails. Does that sound reasonable enough (depending on conditions, of course)?

Me too, but I've been twice now and I'm still nowhere near catching one so I can't help with tactics :D

I've decided that if the slow carrier is carrying some colour and looking roachy, that's where I'll be. If not, I'm just going to have fun on the fast carrier and main river, trying to catch grayling on the fly and doing some trotting for nothing in particular.

As long as the weather is better than last year, I'll be happy!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Third time lucky, hopefully!

What's interesting is that, though anglers are rarely surprised by a totally grim day, we nearly always maintain our optimism. We understand pessimism because our dreams are sometimes dented by the blows of fate, but always our hope returns, like a primrose after a hard winter. ~ C. Yates.

Ive tried a couple of times now (well for part of the day anyway) best Ive done is one just around the pound mark on trotted maggot. Tried with ledgered flake over mash but only thing I caught was a carp. Depending on conditions I wll most likely try trotting maggot or bread again. If ts teemng down might plot up under a brolly and give the tip a go. I think a bit of luck is the key!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

That would be nice :)

There are some big roach in the main river too, and in fact I reckon they'd be easier to catch from there. The slow carrier with loads of people about must be nigh on impossible.

Looks like everyone is thinking about the Roach in the slow carrier...me included!

Was also thinking of sitting it out there on legered bread.Has anyone ever legered on the main river? if so what sort of weight are we talking to hold bottom assuming the river is at normal height.
