Chris Lythe no longer taking orders

He told me about this when I got my spitfire from him a couple of months back. I think he said it'll probably take about 2yrs to clear his order book. He's then going to make runs of reels and advertise them on his website as first come first served. That way he won't have people complaining about waiting times and he can charge the going rate, most likely be about 750 to 900 notes in a couple of years !

I've still got a couple of reels on his books yet :).

I am not sure that people would complain about the waiting times if they were accurate. It just lets you know you are getting something hand crafted to order. It is when that time is two years over the original expected.

Can understand him wanted to clear his books as it makes sense but he would be better restarting orders once he is back to a position he can judge delivery better, health permitting that is.

If he goes the way he intends it Will be more like 'Perfection Angling'. Off the shelf batches rather than designed too order. Can he then command such a price?

I am not saying they would be at the PA price as his reels cannot be compared to theirs. Would be a bit like comparing the apprentice to the master, judging by the reels I have that is.

I think that now that production has stopped prices for these reels are only heading north. The second hand CL market has always commanded higher prices than new simply because you 'buy off' the four year wait. For those willing to wait the new prices were a bargain in my opinion but that option is no longer available.

I don't doubt his motivation for closing the order book, being crouched over a lathe for long periods producing the same precision components year after year can't be much fun but it could also be a shrewd business move. Starve the market for a couple of years (probably four) and then produce a range of centrepins available immediately. I think he'll be able to name his price.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back
