TRAWLERMEN

This sounds like a no-lose situation.

If most people enjoy watching the show, they will get a slightly better feel for how dangerous a job it is.

If most people are horrified, it may cause pressure on the government to make some changes.

So, somehthing of value for those who enjoy watching the process and those who think it is horrible.

The "their practices are horrible" folks can watch the BBC online blogs for horrified outcries and if none (or very few) are seen, can assume that most non-anglers don't object to it.

Nicely put Newt. God post. I probably will watch it, if I can wrest the remote control from my house mate.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

I watched one episode. They caught a netfull of coalfish, decided they weren't worth much and would take up hold space that could otherwise be used for cod and just dumped the whole lot overboard dead.

I won't watch it again as a matter of principle.

I may not be able to influence wider fishing policy as an individual but by not watching, I can at least hope to influence the shows producers not to commission another serise. If this takes money directly out of the pockets of the individual people featured in the show (I assume they are paid for participation) who are willing to abuse the natural world.....Good.

Hi......I would like to defend the skipper who dumped the dead Coalfish back into the sea.......It wasn't because they were worth less than Cod or other white fish. I can tell you that no fisherman likes or even wants to ditch any fish they catch because, they also feel that it's a waste.

It's because of the stupit an un-reasonable quotas that the EU have slapped on them.

They can only catch a set amount of each type of fish, (No matter how much its worth) and once they go over that quota, they are ordered by defra to throw the remaining fish back into the sea.

They know its a waste, not just beacuse the fish are dead, but its also money at the end of there trip, that they would to pay there crew and feed there familys, and I can tell you they hate doing it and it breaks there hearts to do so.

Our uk Trawlers are watched like hawks by defra, but trawlers from our "Friends" across the channel get away with doing what they want, and its our crews that take the blame. Its not right or fair!

The EU has also given our trawlers only few short days a month to go to sea, they can not be at sea any longer, or the boat owner and skipper will be up in court and fined a stupid amount of money. And this means that some trawler owners will go bust because there is no way they can afford to pay it.

OK, so how about they sell the boat and find work elsewhere if they can't cope with the quotas? It's what everyone else has to do when things go pearshaped.

For most if not all of the above mentioned it happens to be a livelyhood which casts back through the generations. Forget about the money issue being the drive , most of these lads were doing this job(and for a hell of a lot less pay) while you were still sh1tting green. I STILL find it unbelievably absurd to believe the "facts" from the "experts" stating the rapid decline in fish stocks. How can it be acceptable to believe at best a guess from what is almost an undefinable / uncalculable amount of fish. Even the nature shows/ programs viewing lions tigers hippos etc can only give an estimate of the amount remaining , so giving IMO ridiculous surveys and predictions of depleting fish stocks is beyond a joke.

Give the lads a break , or better still..............give it a go yourself first and let us all know what you think.

Why do you think the men / women in question do it? These people who are on the "front line" so to speak (working on deck , getting their hands dirty) do it for a love of the job , an inbred passion of the sea NOT for the money as much as you would believe.

I've been to sea in some unbelievable conditions and thought to myself "i must be barmy!!!" but these people choose to do it , no-one forced them with a gun to do it , it is their choice and love of the sea to do it.

Without full and undeniable proof of the so called "depletion of fish stocks" i will back these guys to the hilt.

Fishing is fishing , Life is life , but life wouldn't be very enjoyable without fishing................ Mr M 12:03 / 19-3-2009

Quite like the show and at least they are honest about throwing the fish back. I think it tries (to much in my opinion) to get a bit of public sympathy and aims to get the general public on side of the hard done by commercial fishermen. Probably not the BBC intentioned but managed by the fishing industries publicity boys.

Its bad news when they are throwing back fish so they can keep the quota for more valuable fish. This is a quote from the Whitby MP on the subject

"The fishermen are having to discard perfectly marketable fish because it’s small even though it’s within the legal limit in order to save their quota for bigger fish that they can sell at a better price"

Whose to blaim for this ?
