another person killed by a dangerous dog.

i thought this type of dog had to be muzzled?

ridiculous that the brave police had to scare it away with a fire extinguisher, and not put a couple of bullets into it.

i dont like rotties purely because they are big enough and powerfull enough to do what ever they like whenever they like, dont like alsations either because they are powerfull and clever and moult on your trousers.

dogs are wild animals that are nice to you for free food

Don't you think a lot of dogs are what their owners allow them to be? I know Trogg has a couple rotties and wouldn't be without them. He has 2 little girls and the dogs have never harmed them. Unfortunately some breeds are more inclined to be "red zone" cases and can turn on their owner w/o any obvious reason. People who own them best have real good home owner's insurance - at least here in the States.

Quite right Jan, but there are the exceptions too as with ALL animals!! And a dog is as Chesters says a WILD animal which does things for food and as long as you APPRECIATE that it is a wild animal and give it the respect......

But what gets me about these stories is how they come in BIG lumps???? Why is that?

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

Nope. A dog is a member of a species that has been domesticated for yonks and quite different from a wild animal someone has managed to 'tame'.

Granted, they can revert to a feral state but so can people if placed in the proper situation.

They dont its just the way the press reports the news, bank fraud was yesterdays story, dogs are today's who knows what tomorrows will be. Gun crime I expect.

Any big dog with a big gape of the jaw can inflict terrible injuries on a child or adult. I see some real risk taking with such dogs, especially when children are involved. I would always treat such dogs with a good deal of caution, especially with children, as jealousy normally is the trigger for even a placid dog to attack.

I am currently training a Rottie and Boxer who share the same house, the boxer is a new addition to the family. The older Rottie bitch of 8 years protects the I year boxer as her own, and any passing dog child or adult is considered a threat and attempt to bite.

The Boxer has also taken on the example set by the Rottie which is quite rare in Boxers. The problem as I see it is the fact that the dogs do not see the woman handler as the pack leader or alpha bitch in this case. i have had to bring the Rottie down a peg or two in front of the sibling boxer to command any respect,. But as I do not own the dogs and the next stage is the lady handler assumes the role as leader.

i feel that as humans we do try and humanise our dogs, and tend to forget that although dogs are domesticated by and large they are a pack animal and do need a pecking order to ensure that things run well. Big powerful dogs need a firm hand, do not chastise with hitting, merely strong clear commands, and a good quality choke eer check chain wil do it.

If not then there should be only one chice to make.

Hang on Elton a man was savaged to death by a dog, not exactly ground breaking news for some perhaps but a terrible way to die for anyone. Point is it is avoidable too so yes I think it is newsworthy. There has been a spate of such attackes recently, the small child savaged to death in a 'pub, the woman who had to have her arm amputated as a result of an attack. 'Cant believe you posted that.

My point is that things like this, though tragically sad, have been going on for eternity. It's just that they get published more now and are usually followed by a knee-jerk 'ban it' reaction by this Government, which seems to do whatever the tabloid papers tells it to do.
