Anderoo 394
No probs, it's one of my favourite swims but as you say rather an overwhelming one...! Interesting about the margin tinca - I have tried there before with not much luck, but that is where Glyn had his bream from. I've seen the odd tench wandering around that margin corner too and it always felt very perchy. And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
Christian T 10
Will people be scaling down the line when fishing the perch? I have 10lb mainline spooled on at the moment "the countryside must be experienced in its worst weather to appreciate the shades of its beauty"
Anthony78 16
Me personally no, the perch in there are not exactly rig shy so won't be put off by the thicker line. It also means that if you do hook that bonus tench then you still have a good chance of landing it. The only time I drop below 10lb bs at Wingham is when float fishing and then I'll drop down to 6lb. Effort equals reward!!
Steve Burke 177
I fish 8lb line. Hook lengths may be the same, they may be lighter. As Anderoo says the fish aren't pressured. I'd keep your 10lb line on but bring a selection of lighter hook lengths. The regulars will also confirm the Wingham fish fight above their weight! Anderoo 394
I normally use 6lb line for the perch as long as I'm not fishing over bars or around thick weed. But heavier mainline with a lighter hooklength will be fine regardless. And yes, the perch at wingham are the hardest fighting perch I've ever caught, I've often thought I was playing a 7lb tench only to find a 2lb perch in the net! I have decided now to stay set up for the tench but to bring the perch gear too so I can alternate. Steve, is it too late to get a tub of lobs? Steve Burke 177
No problem Andrew, I always get a couple of spares. Rusty 284
I’ve been in a bit of a quandary with the predicted cold & wet conditions. It’s the tench which attract me to Wingham so previously I’ve gone all out for them with both rods. I’ve done ok in terms of size but not in terms of numbers so this year during daylight hours just one rod will be out with the corn/bread/hemp and the other baited with lobs and a maggot feeder. During the night both will targeting tench. If I read that back often enough I’ll convince myself it’s sensible a plan. It's never a 'six', let's put it back
Anderoo 394
Sounds sensible Rusty. Given the conditions and time of year I do think it's worth fishing in a way (in the daytime, anyway) that means you can catch both perch and tench. A running lead/feeder with worm or maggots on the hook will catch both. After dark, the eels often mean a change of bait, unless you don't mind them. Vagabond 1013
Blow me down if Steve then said he'd changed his mind and put me on the Point Am I missing something ? I have no inkling of where I am to fish. I did ask for the far side of Main Lake, which I have never fished, so would appreciate any gen on the more distant swims. A chilly weekend forecast, and a new swim - sounds suitably challenging ! RNLI Governor World species 471 : UK species 105 : English species 95 .
