All,

More snow and bad weather. To amuse myself I was thumbing through old "stuff"

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

If that's the live bait what's the quarry?

If all else fails, follow the intructions.

All,

My largest and one of maybe half a dozen alligator gar was 80 lb+.  Tigger, you won't need a float. The terminal gear is as follows.  Woman's nylon stocking - whole chicken (always been a argument which is best - feathers or no feathers). The nylon stocking with chicken is secured to the mainline.  The "hook" is the stocking.  The gar's teeth are such that they cannot go "backward" so once hung-up they are doomed.  Some guys (probably from British stock) like to use a fiddly protective leader.  Quarter inch cotton rope was the "go to" fix.

Phone

Even since my day - alligator gar's status among fish has risen.  The remaining stock is pretty well protected

I know of people who use a similar method to catch eels, obciously a scaled down set up!

No doubt you would catch pike using that kind'a method/set up.

Just rememberd, i'm sure the TV presenter on a programme called "river monsters" over here in the uk used the method to catch eels in Japan.

Back in the day, I seem to remember reading of eels being caught by 'dibbing'(?). This was threading worms onto wool, no hook, and when the eels teeth got caught in the wool they were lifted out. Maybe other members 'of a certain age' can confirm its true, or is my mind playing tricks?

John.

PS, just done a quick search and it was 'babbing' for eels.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John
