UFO’s

When I was serving as a Meteorologist in the fleet air arm based at RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall we had a Cloud Base Measurer which we would shine onto the base of the clouds at night to measure the cloud bases.

Whenever we used it we’d receive several calls from the public reporting strange UFOs hovering over the airfield and surrounding countryside and then shooting off at a tremendous speed. Which always made us smile.

Most start off unidentified but turn out to have a perfectly rational explanation.

Some however don't.

It took me an age to figure out that the lights that would appear to hang in the air to the southwest of me, before either vanishing or moving left or right and quickly fading, are in fact aircraft takeoff lights coming from Luton airport. Luton is a fair way from Kidderminster!

The large reflective sphere that I watched hanging in the sky in broad daylight 45 years ago is still waiting for an explanation.
