Had I not seen it here and only read the resume on the TV menu I wouldn't have watched it at all, having seen it touted on here I thought I'd try it, but when it comes to TV I have a very low boredom threshold, I turned it off after a few minutes.

Format nicked from Bake-Off - just substitute fishing for cake and that's it- with almost identical comments from Matt Hayes=Paul Hollywood which was really irritating. A real disappointment for me, maybe it'll get better.

I liked it, fair enough it's in a competition format with one angler getting droped each week but thats the current vogue in TV. I think it would have been a much better program and enjoyable to me and other anglers if it was just Ben and Matt travelling the world fishing and showing us what the destinations have to offer. However, would TV commitioners and producers want to commit funds to making a program like that? The competion format is most likely what got the program commissioned, the public just seem to love it.

 

The explaining of the methods and little diagrams of techniques was a little annoying but again useful to those who do not fish. I think they are hoping to get more then just a basic angling audience and i hope they find it. One thing I have noticed over the years is that anglers in general do not like angling programs. There are a few exceptions like Passion etc but most anglers seem to want high art in their fishing programs where as commissioners want bums on seats.

 

I see this series as a great way to show case all the great fishing available around the world in fabulous destinations. I will take the uninspired competion format if it means seeing some great fish, interesting techniques and wonderful landscapes. Plus I do like both Ben and Matt and think they are a good choice of presenters. Matt can provide the more practical side and opinion to the show and Ben can be the nice audience friendly face to the show.

Lost interest after half an hour of six-second shots of someone paddling a kyak, someone casting, someone looking at a lure, someone holding a bent rod, a distant shot of someone unhooking a bullhead, someone saying fred had had a bite, someone paddling a kyak, someone casting, someone looking at a lure, someone holding a bent rod, a distant shot of someone unhooking a bullhead, someone saying fred had had a bite,someone paddling a kyak, someone casting, someone looking at a lure, someone holding a bent rod, a distant shot of someone unhooking a bullhead, someone saying fred had had a bite,someone paddling a kyak, someone casting, someone looking at a lure, someone holding a bent rod, a distant shot of someone unhooking a bullhead, someone...........

 

But you get the idea - a director with a grasshopper mind, a producer with little imagination, poor camera work on the action (the odd scenic shot was good) and a repetitive style. They are not doing justice to the anglers. Very few sequences of anglers actually landing fish - the 5lb trout being the only memorable shot in the first episode.

 

How much real action was missed by this six-second attention-span approach? If someones rod has bent because of a fish - lets see the end result, or else we might suspect there is a rock, or a cameraman's assistant at the other end.

 

The second program was little better.

 

I have been to both locations (Iceland and Cuba), and know (and have fished with) one of the participants, and also met and chatted with one of the presenters, but despite this found little to catch my interest. I am just hoping we can see a sequence of enough length to convey whats going on .

 

At the moment, the series is disjointed and dysfunctional. I will watch more in the hope of seeing something interesting,. but such hope is fading.

 

If you think I am being overcritical, just watch a re-run of APFA again. This lot rates below the Robson Green series.
