Hand lining!

So where does all our modern tackle fit in this scenario??

And all our modern methods?

And super strong thin lines ?

Seems to me that showing a little bit of initative and hand skills is not in any way detrimental.

So there may be a risk that the elastic or line could break and the angler getting his eye knocked out....kind of evens the battle up a bit doesn't it???

Non pole anglers can never appreciate the "fear" element that comes with not having a reel with a super slipping clutch, which can make catching even large fish very easy and actually quite boring at times.

Its down to the individual Den to decide for themselves. But in my view handlining is one step too far down a very slippery slope.

I'm not averse to progress, but I'd argue, with some conviction, that this form of hand lining, and the reasoning behind it, is not a way forward.

All seems a bit similar to the introduction of the hair rig. everyone up in arms at the time but how many carp anglers wouldn't use it now.

The keepnets these fish are "crammed" into are not mesh but a carp friendly material.

But they would be better off not being crammed into a net anyway Mark! Go back five posts and re-read please Mark.

I note that you refer to carp friendly materials. Does everything have to revolve round carp?

Peter, many of the best innovations come from carp anglers, just ask yourself how long it would have taken the pike fishers to come up with the idea of using unhooking mats?

Even now I see many lure anglers in the winter "travelling light" without one.....and some of them are members of PAC! and known to me.

I should have made it clear Den, I wasn't knocking carp anglers, just the carp industry. There is a difference.

I don't now carry an unhooking mat on my boat! I did for years, & never used it. I unhook in the water. Roaming the bank I do carry one. But I accept that many don't as they are comfortable unhooking a pike whilst it is suspended by its chin. But I couldn't argue about who was first re unhooking mats, simply cause I don't really know! But many Broads boat anglers were using that green synthetic rubber carpet underlay stuff way back in the early seventies.

Yes, many good developments have come from carp anglers, but it is a pity that it has been marred by more recent developments such as carp stew pond style fishing.

My first introduction to sea fishing was with a handline.

The lead weighed about 2lb and the line was 60 yrds long.

What do you think fishermen used before rods came along?

I was the first one in the family to use a rod. My father and his brothers never used them. Their father's family never used them. Nobody ever used them, but they ate more fish than any of the people posting on here.

Peter Waller:

But were they fishing for sport, ?

Oh, I forgot.

If it were just for food, I suppose they would have put out a trot with dozens of hooks on it!

They all had access to boats, but still fished with handlines from the beach.
