I'm lost here Peter, why would you want to shoot at an arrow, and wouldn't you get splinters in ya tongue?

I'm not convinced either way. If we can fish for food then surely we can also shoot, even arrows, for food?

Well, there's the thing. In the unlikely situation where you were hunting to survive a cross bow would be an ideal tool. Silent, extremely powerful and very, very accurate in the right hands.

As a sporting tool................no, I don't think so.

but all responsible hunters know that sometimes it doesn't and should move heaven and earth to tack down the critter and put it down as quickly as possible.

I agree, sort of, but not completely.

Yes, certainly, and arrow isn't going to kill quickly and yes, certainly you must make sure to locate the animal dead or alive. But quickly is not a good thing.

A good hit with a broadhead will certainly put the animal down but if if is left alone for a little while, this happens much faster than if you get it's juices flowing by going after it too soon. About 30 minutes delay before you set out and things work much better.

And a note to add on to chesters1's comment - contentious is fine and the forum would be boring without some of it. As long as a post avoids personal attacks, a bit of disagreement is fine and good.

Does anyone have any idea WHY bow hunting was outlawed in the UK? After all, you folks had a lock on longbow expertise for yonks.

But, despite Lonsdalepark's emotive comment, don't you think she has a point Newt? Hunt to kill by all means, but is a bow and arrow really a good killing tool? I agree that it is an excellent and sporting hunting tool, but I'm not so sure that its ability to kill is up to that of a rifle.

Kill over as long a distance as a rifle, no. Drop a large animal in it's tracks, no. Good killing tool, yes. And on small game, instant kill from the impact as well when using blunt tips for rabbits and birds.

I can certainly understand folks who get emotive about certain topics and ideas. I also have learned that many things we in the States are strange and more than a little barbaric seeming to many in the UK. I usually leave those posts with no comment. I simply have a slight aversion to phrasing that is designed to condem AND that makes it pretty clear that the poster has no first-hand knowledge.

Interesting about the cross bow. Their use is more restricted in the US than guns and certainly than a regular bow. For instance, we have bow-only seasons for hunting certain animals but cross bows are only permitted if the hunter is disabled and could not reasonably use a long bow.

I'm not sure how the law pans out re bows, long bows etc. My involvement/interest petered out about the same as the laws changed in the UK Newt, and to be honest past that date I don't really have a clue. It would, by your comments, seem that US bow hunting is more advanced than it was in UK as I remember it.

I agree Newt, my comment about rapid follow up was made in the context of rabbit shooting these days with a gun. If you were talking larger game, certainly you would want to let things settle for a while, even if to let the instinct to run dissipate.

To be honest, Peter, I thought it had always been illegal to hunt with a bow in the UK, back to the times of killing the Kings' deer?

its probably banned because it reminds frogs of agincourt ,mind you it was a history making battle not many know it was the first recorded use of a firearm (i.e. powder propelled) in a battle ,from that day on bows were no longer the WMD of war (although it took some time to catch on) and itwas a frenchmen who used it :) so we can blame them in their shame of losing to bringing modern warfare to the fore :D
