Shooting bears

Whether its right or wrong to hunt bears, its a good example of how different cultures see things.

Perhaps its wrong to "judge" another culture,by applying "ideas" from another?Just a thought.

If you aren't confident that your own values are correct, why hold them in the first place? I don't hold with cultural relativism, if I believe it's morally wrong to genitally mutilate children in London (for example) I have to believe that it's morally wrong to do it in Somalia. We should reserve the right to disapprove of and condemn other cultures, but we should not automatically assume that we have the right to force them to change.

"that wasn't any form of sport as far as i'm concerned .that stupid trophy hunting woman murdered that poor bear! "

"You don't have to see a predator to know that shooting it for fun is pointless and rather sad."

Hmm remove the words trophy hunting woman, bear ,predator & shooting from the above posts and insert the words fisherman, fish and catching and you have exactly what groups like PETA think about anglers.

Personally i'm not into trophy hunting but it is popular in America where hunting is closely linked with fishing and a lot of people enjoy doing both, perhaps the poster of said video mistakenly thought the same was the case in the UK, still I guess they won't make the same mistake again.

I'm the one everybody seems to go for, so I will play devils advocate.

How many countries in the world have a catch and release LAW for coarse (river) fish?

AFAIK America, South Africa, Europe etc, acn keep the fish they catch (In Germany, for whatever reason, Carp must be killed when caught!) Australia does not allow the fisherman to return Carp to the water BY LAW!! Granted that they are not the same Carp as we know!!

Australia also treats our Perch (imported there by anglers) as a delicacy, calling them REDFIN (Reddies).

I wonder what some countries are thinking about our British way of angling, catching the fish and then lovingly returning it to the water, sometimes also giving the bigger Carp names like "twotone" or "mother"?

The world, for all the transport marvels making it easier to get there, is STILL a big and diverse place!

We could have gone the other way and paid a nominal sum for our fishing licences and paid more every time we bagged a legal size fish to take home for a trophy!

If the bear population is viable and will not die out because of hunting, who are we to argue - we don't know the facts. We don't know whether they are attacking and killing people/livestock/crops or whatever!!

Where are OUR bears, OUR big cats, etc.?

Wild Boar nearly went the same way - so who are we to criticize

True, but the difference is that PETA then make the leap from being entitled to an opinion to being entitled to force it on others.

but fish are not fluffy ,you wont get any feeling about them in 99% of the population .stick a bit of fluff on and its different.

you get people that hate cats and those that adore them ,the only difference is is how much cat crap is coming out of the window and how big the smell is.

if you dont like xxxx (x being a particular animal) you wont care what happens to it ,fish dont have any old ladies collecting them in the main

Also a perfect reason for not closing down a topic from another country when people in the country of the 'home site' are apalled by it.

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Just to be a pedant: InGermany, all fish caught must be killed, not just carp and Australia has exactly the same type of carp as we do.

Oh, and wild boar did go the same way in the UK. They were hunted to extinction and populations only re-established themselves from escapes from speciality meat farms - with a little help from the animal rights brigade.
