Poor old Esox could do without the bad press.

Personally I think it's about as likely as the stories of horses being grabbed by the nose and pulled in while they're drinking from the river.

Blokes barking mad if you ask me! :D

Brian Carragher:

Rumour has it that Loz Harrop's new 'dog nobbler' lure is based on that jack russell pup. Answers on a postcard please for where he's attatching the trebles

I don't know, locals around Saltfleet, Lincs which was cleared entirely of silver fish for restocking another river (the EA put just the pike back), say that the Pike have been a bit frisky and started attacking the ducks (one local swears he saw a Pike drag an adult duck straight down the other day).

I've had a Pike to 15lb from there, so I guess it's not beyond the realms of possibility - assuming Mr Pike is feeling very peckish!

I suspect that some ducklings that get "taken" by pike are just diving underwater. I have though caught a jack with a duckling in its throat. Whether the duckling was taken alive or dead is another matter of course.

However, I have once witnessed a fully-grown coot taken by a pike. It went down squawking - which was in complete contrast to the immediate silence from the dozens of other ducks that swam round and round in circles at a safe distance!

I've pulled a Coot from the throat of a mid double. As was said though, it may have just grabbed a bit of carrion.

It isn't beyond the realms of possibility I suppose. After all they're taking much of the blame for the demise in water voles. A tiny Russel pup isn't much bigger I guess. However, from what I can remember of reading this post a day or two back, it sounded like he was reading from the 'Jaws' screenplay.

It must be incredible pike fishing where the EA have taken out all the pike's natural food! What a strange thing for them to do! It must be pike anglers' heaven!
