Just seen this post,never read all 4 pages. Well for me the guy should die in a Scottish jail. On the same territory that he murdered 270 innocent people on :thumbs:

I can't find a single reference to him admitting his guilt. Perhaps you mean it's implied by dropping the appeal? But I'd bet a good amount that that is part of a behind-the-scenes deal connected to this release.

 

 

Glenn, having been prosecuted and found guilty, dropping an apeal would appear to be a prima facie admission of guilt, or at very least no longer protesting innocence.

 

Various people have complained at al-Megrahi being given a hero's welcome back in Libya. By all means criticise Col. Gadaffi and hi acolytes, but it's hard to understand what part in this al-Megrahi could have played - excet for being in the unfotrunate position of being there.

I'm sure on the news this week they said the appeal would have to be dropped as a requirement of his release.

If you believe he did it, then the whole situation from his release to his joyous reception in Libya is deplorable.

 

If you believe he was just an innocent, or partly innocent dupe, thrown to the authorities as a sop by Gaddafi, , then its not so bad.

 

What was disgusting, was the long drawn out spiel from MacAskill when he announced the decision, I heard it live on Radio 4.

It was as though he was announcing the decision of the Judges on Strictly Come Dancing, long pauses before he made any significant statements and the interceding waffle about compassion and every other word was "I".

If he thought this was going to announce his arrival on the world stage for statesmen, he was sadly deluded.

Been thinking about this one a bit of late.

Had the government made a statement to the effect that:

It is vital that Lybia becomes a functional member of the international community to prevent it from slipping back into its former role as a rouge state and becoming a recruiting and training ground for a future generation of terrorsts and extremists.

To prevent that from happening, the UK will be expanding its embassy, doing trade deals and working with the Lybians on several issues of mutual interest - one of which was the Lockerbie bomber who is in any case terminally ill.

We have decided to allow him to return to his home country to serve out the remainder of his sentence or be released as the Lybian government see fit.

 

I don't think I'd have had any major issue.

 

More Bitter pills than that have been swallowed in the name of reconcilliation in Northern Ireland, South Africa and in other parts of the world.

 

What really gets my back up is the arrogance of a government who think that they can do a secret deal, lie to the public and sweep the embarrassing dirt that might come up durring the appeal under the carpet.

And that is probably adrenalin in full flow - I'm not an apologist for the guy, but his trial stank, the evidence wouldn't have convicted a self-confessed murderer and I am sure he was simply a pawn is a work of expediency.

Terrorists are prepared to die for their cause, BUT, they are going to run out of terrorists unless they find a "soft" target.

 

Scotlands government, by letting him free, has just given them one......................... the UK!!
