I'm a bit worried now as well. Are you still going to Wingham this weekend Budgie? I might have to camo up... :D

EDIT: just saw your earlier reply, looks like I'm safe as long as I don't catch loads of big fish.

I.e. I'm completely safe

Being an ex police officer it is my experience that rehabilitation schemes do not actually work... Angling however, is a wonderful pastime and it could indeed be the answer for some who offend.

The part I do not agree with is the "reward" of free fishing for offenders... Make them work for it! and for their sky tv and comfortable life in prison!!!

I'm not so sure that the use of our fishing licence money to provide it for them is correct though (out of principal); as surely it should taken out of the general publics tax purse.

A good idea; as long as they stay away from my tackle shed when they decide to takeup their fishing.

My concerns are for the fish, a small pond fished every day by inexperienced anglers, they will be destroyed if not supervised and taught correctly.

Let’s hope that if it does happen that it is very well managed and the correct skills are passed onto the in mates.

If it is a benefit to society in general then over all it has to be a good thing, but only if managed properly, not just a few hairy arsed guards watching over a bunch of untrained inmates knocking 5 bells out of the fish

I'm not sure why people are so against helping offenders to turn their lives around.

Hmmm

A day split between hard physical labour and compulsory education; having to work hard for the most basic luxuries teaches academic and practical skills, work ethic and maybe just a little appreciation for how hard their victims have had to work for the goods that were stolen.

Sitting on their arses watching soaps, socialising with other prisoners and fishing teaches how to beat and cheat the system, how to rob more effectivly and how to sit arround a lake all day instead of going out and finding a job.

Sorry Anderoo but if you want to help people who find themselves in prison, decent in prison education and hard physical graft are the way to go. The only thing is that a group competent teachers costs a bit more than a one off payment of 20k for a muddy hole with a few fish in it. I'm afraid that this proposal is long on talk but short on delivery.

i had a brief "visit" when finding two library books in your cell meant loss of "earnings" ,aside from that it was just a social club ,now i expect for most "inmates" its probably better than they get outside  no crapping in a bucket today you get a bog a cell ,slopping out was part of the punishment (as well as the stink three geezers did filling their buckets in front of you ,prisoners never had it so good rather than punishment its now like butlins was in the sixties and people paid to holiday there!

then we have the open prisons where inmates bar a little inconvenience in having to stay at night can pretty well do as they please in the daytime ,makes you laugh if it wasn't true

it was changing when i visited! with the middle cell in each 3 were turned into two bogs with a wall between ,the lack of cells boils a lot down to this with one in three becoming of no use at least in pentonville!

I must admit I have nothing against the principal of providing a lake it is no different to providing a football pitch or a gymnasium and may even be more beneficial in terms of reform and rehabilitation.

However, why are the EA paying for this however small the contribution; surely the cost of the facility should be met out of the prison’s own budget, do the FA subsidise the football pitches and facilities, I doubt it.

"Angling has an important and beneficial role in improving everyone’s quality of life, and this is certainly cheaper for the taxpayer than dealing with the consequences once young people get into the criminal justice system,” said fisheries team leader John Shannon.

A spokesman for the prison service also defended the scheme, saying: “The aim of the unit is to teach social and coping skills to reduce the incidence of re-offending and therefore protect the public."

We all have opinions and I don't wish to argue with anyone and get nowhere, but this is the only bit of the above article I agree with. I don't care that the money is coming from the EA. If it was coming from elsewhere in Government it would still be coming from our taxes, and then people would be angry about that. Compared to the cost of housing prisoners it's nothing. I spend more than that a year on freelancers.

Locking people up and hiding the problem away does nothing to get to the root of it and solve it. Why do bullies bully? Because they are bullied themselves.

However, they should have to have a rod licence.

“Now we know why the pensioners’ and disabled anglers’ rod licence went up by almost 40 per cent. We wouldn’t want prisoners to get bored when there was nothing on TV,” said one reader.

This is all it comes down to really, an emotive, misguided sense of injustice.

We have yet to see any actual facts about the scheme. Des Taylor ranting doesn't count
