free river water in the UK

Recommended Posts

This is a good point to bring up the "check out under bridges" routine. These scraps of land are always very dubious spots in terms of ownership and cracking spots for perch.

there chew on that :P

all land in the country is owned ,a bridge is owned up to the middle by whoever the land belongs to if both sides are the same owner then the bridge is theirs to ,road bridges and railway bridges as well as a strip of land each side are owned by the government or railtrack

I think that there is probably something on the EA web site. I know that they do have a list of venues fishable with just a licence.

Also free stretches in Bristol and Bath and some other places....have to mind all the litter though and most of the waters are truely hammered

EA Fisheries Guides - will list free fishing - as well as much else...

Just make sure you know who's land it is you are fishing on. And don't be fooled into thinking that 'Common Land' is anyone's land it's not. There is no such thing anymore..:)

Good luck though there is nothing better than fishing where nobody has fished before...Wonderful :D

You are free to fish any river that is effected by a diurnal tide. However you are not free to fish off privately owned banks.

Yes you are completely spot on ;)

Unless it's a private fishery! In Dorset the tidal Piddle (The Royalty Fishery), tidal Dorset Stour and tidal Hants Avon (The Royalty Fishery) are all private fisheries, the clue being in the names where the king granted a private right of fishery, as is the case with The Several Fishery (not Severals!) which was severed from the land rights.
