Predator fish kept illegally

Slack lines

Recommended Posts

The broads are in one of the driest parts of the country. The only reason they don't turn into wadi's every summer is the fact that its tidal I think.

Didn't take into account the carpist explosion tbh. I agree it ups the risk considerably. I sometimes think fisheries should be properly governed, but how to do it fairly and consistently? I actually did a sneaky water test on a fishery near me while taking a wander round, nitrate levels were off the scale and nitrite was quite evident with even trace amounts of ammonia present. It was no more than 100 feet square and had over 20 pegs. I think the best tactic there was a size 2/0, dragged through the water. Saw 2 foul hooked Carp in the 10 minutes I was there!

Heavy stocking of cyprinid fish has several effects - large mud grubbing species, particularly carp but also tench and bream stir up sediment. This makes the water muddy, preventing light getting to plants growing on the bottom and killing them. It also exposes the sediments to oxygen, which tends to release phosphate bound to the sediments into the water column. They also physically destroy some plant matter. High density stocking of small cyprinids results in high predation on the small zooplankton which feed on suspended algae. The net result is that grazing on algae is reduced, phosphate fertilisation is increased and competition from plants is eliminated. You get a turbid ecosystem, dominated by algae, the classic commercial mud puddle.

You could create the same sort of problems by massively overstocking with other species, but carp are particularly open to abuse because they will tolerate horrible conditions, and particularly problematic because they are such grubbers of the bottom. Once you've tipped the balance towards domination by algae, the pond may stay that way, even if you quit tipping lorryloads of carp in it. I remember a pond where the committee (all matchmen) killed off the emergent plants with aquatic herbicide. A pond which had been absolutely crystal clear turned into a mud puddle and the plants never came back because there was no sunlight to the bottom any more. The remedial action required to fix that situation is to remove most of the grazing fish and/or add more predators.

The problem we have in the UK is less the existence of carp, like in those countries where they successfully breed like rabbits, and more the way commercial fisheries are managed.

I prefer mine a bit fresher than that B)

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

That's probably a delicacy somewhere in Scandinavia, you philistine! :D

Oops!

Hang on a minute, what a great idea Steve....let's send all of our crap to Scandinavia to be soused, salted, smorgasborded (?) or whatever.

I'll start a business catching them....anyone want to come in on it, John, Anderoo, Steve? B)
