Which species do you fish for?

Recommended Posts

I kind of rank the species I fish for, there are those I always fish for every year, those I wish I fished for more and those that frankly I don't care that much about but if I catch one well it's nice enough but don't have the time or inclination to target them. The list's are not fixed and some fish will move up to my main interest, while others fall away.

Passion for and take up a lot of fishing time

Tench

Perch

Carp (Passion for cooling recently)

Enjoy and do a little

Pike

Zander (Has gone up from aspirational the last few seasons)

Aspirational list - those I wish I fished for more

Barbel

Chub

Eel

Catfish

Rudd

Not much interest

Roach

Bream (But developing an interest in the big ones, might find this going up the charts :D )

Dace

Any one specialise in just one species? Or are you all rounders? Or do you favour one or two species over all others?

Stephen

Roach are my favourite by variety is the spice of life; fished for roach, crucians and tench yesterday, after tench later today.

Over the course of a season I'll fish for most freshwater species and one or two sea ones as well.

It's seasonal for me. Early summer is mostly tench. Barbel usually late summer. Chub, perch and grayling, September to March. Rainbow trout on my local water, January to June. Rainbow trout on Farmoor, May, with the odd trip at other times. Brown trout, March-May. I take what I can get, though. The odd day fly fishing or spinning in summer for chub and perch, the odd barbel session at the back end, the odd trip to the beach.

I will always be a sucker for barbel and so they come top of my list. As Anderoo says everything else is a close second but I am aiming to do far more trotting on the river this season and also would like to do more lure fishing for pike, perch, trout and chub.

Easy one this - first is chub, everything else equal second.

well ,it had too be chub for me too (i'm not called chavender for nothing) same as Anderoo really all the rest are equally second, i love catching everything and anything thays there before me .and everyone is like my first ,giving me that giddy excitement i felt as a kid .

Snap - this time of year its tench and crucians (just had a new PB of 3-13 - see blog! ;) ) and barbel on the float whilst they're still on the shallows post spawning. As we get later in the year attention turns to trying for bigger barbel on the lead and as we head into autumn its chub, perch followed by grayling and dace as we head into winter - plus trying to track down those elusive Kennet roach. Similar to Tigger I love trotting so the autumn/winter river campaign is anticpated as much as June 16th...

It’s a shame to rank them but if I had to the main species for me are chub & perch with barbel coming up fast on the rails (trotting though, never tried static fishing for them). Tench have moved up the ranking quite a lot since my spring activities and Wingham so I’ll always have time for them. I’ll always have room for roach too but locating good sized specimens would be a time consuming exercise I think.

Other species don’t hold as much interest for me but it is marginal, the only fish I really don’t have any interest in are carp, bream and pike.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back
