At my local lake(30 yrds away)at every exit to the houses and carparks there is a bin. So as you finish for the day unless you live in the lake you have to pass one. But still every time I go to fish or walk round there is stacks of rubbish. The woman who collects the day ticket money walks round with a bag to collect it. Admittedly it could also be the general public that walk round, but when all you tend to find is groundbait bags and rusty tins of sweetcorn, line etc, you know who the culprits are!

I've never understood the mentality myself. When I go fishing, I don't want to sit among old carrier bags, discarded line and drinks bottles and wouldn't want anybody else to sit amongst my rubbish.

The bivvy tag is misleading and also untrue. I use my bivvy for session fishing and always clear my mess away. You see just as much litter from day session anglers. Or maybe that's just the waters I've fished. :)

I don't think rubbish bins are the answer. Indeed, unless they're emptied regularly they just compound the problem and increase the amount of litter.

Nor do I believe that rubbish bags should be provided. Rather it's up to each angler to bring his/her own - which of course a great many of us do.

At my own fishery at Wingham we have almost no litter around the lakes. The only exception is along the public footpath which I have to regularly clear up in the summer. This has on two occasions even included disposable nappies!

Having said that, every couple of years or so I have to remind members that fag ends are also litter. Luckilly though this message does seem to be getting through.

quite right - you don't get many bins down the banks of the stretch of Ribble I fish, so you don't get a choice. Even when I go down the local commercial, I can't remember using the bins they provide - old habits I guess, everything goes in the tackle box

you wont get bins ,fox proof ones are expensive and then they have to employ someone to empty them you cant expect the bailiff to put it in his dustbin as with this talk of charging per bag he`d be out of pocket

Why should a club provide bins - someone's still got to empty them and they can just attract rats. A club I belong to once had a litter problem on one of their waters - their solution? - they CLOSED the water for a whole summer. Members were in uproar! funny thing is this was over a decade ago and litter aint been a problem since. )They also REMOVED bins from this water because of the rats.....

Why on earth should any fishery provide litter bins? What is wrong with the principle that you should take every container back home with you? I find it ridiculous even to suggest that litter is the fault of those controlling the fishery for not providing bins. That just feeds the mentality of those who seem to think it's always somebody else's fault.

The litter is always going to weigh a fraction of whatever was taken to the waterside, and will also take up far less room on the way back. What is the difficulty with taking a clean, leak-proof bag with you, solely for the purpose of containing any messy rubbish. I don't think litter bins should ever be provided. Why should someone else have to clean up your filthy rubbish?

From my own observations its a sad fact that pleasure anglers generally leave less litter than 'overnighters'

of course its only the minority of either species that cause the problem but plastic bags spilling over with waste, tied to trees usually indicates a long session to me.

Our perception of time as an orderly sequence of regular ticks and tocks has no relevance here in the alternative dimension that is fishing....... C.Yates
