They go down to the river in the evenings and over the weekends with their rods and barbeques, removing fish to eat.

 

Some of the operations are bigger and the fish are being sold on.

 

 

Must be dead-easy to catch them at it, then. I wonder what the successful prosecution rate is? I couldn't see it mentioned in the article:

perhaps the trust who have been paid 30k by the E A and the new Polish guy taken on by the trust can intervene and sort it.

Maybe the person who should be prosecuted would be the purchasers. To say "they didn't know" should double the fine. They "should have known" if they are familiar with local food products.

I hope the cormorants eat every single fish in the country, then at least those who get there knickers in a twist about it would have a point.

I am afraid I have to agree Dales. It is only nature doing what it does best, adapting to survive. And to the people with still waters who complain about them then what do they expect. They stuff a puddle with fish making it easy for the cormorants to have a free slap up meal. If I had the choice to try and catch my tea floating down a moving river or simply pick it up from a puddle I know what I would do.

 

Also maybe if they looked at the reasons why so many more had come inland rather than blast them all out of the sky we wouldnt have this 'problem'.

Well at least someone might take notice if it's salmon.

I didn't renew my local club card this year because the association's waters were all close to towns and the pike population of the middle Severn has been so badly mauled by poachers that I didn't catch one at all until September last year despite 95% of my fishing being done with lures.

I picked up a BAA card this season as BAA waters are a little further from civilization and I've had a few pike whilst spinning for chub this year already.

 

I suspect that this is largely a closed season problem when there are few anglers on the banks and realisticly, a team of half a dozen EA enforcement officers with kayaks and radios could resolve this issue on the major rivers in the midlands. Add the same again for the south east, south west and north of England and you have a solution. Seemingly, they don't want to get out there though to enforce the rules and would much rather engage in pointless re-stocking excerses.

Chill Les, this lot are on the case, the only problem i have with the figure quoted, is, have 25000 reported seeing the same bird or are there indeed 25000 birds, either way, when the puddle owners shout loud enough, birds will end up dead.

 

The next thing you see from this lot are reports of club matches etc, were tons and tons of fish are caught, back slapping all around, reports of hundreds of carp caught in round puddles, more back slapping, yet the looser in this, is gonna be the bird, removed from a healthy environment because it to is successful. Our resident ornothologist Worms will back me on this. Ask him about the myth regarding sea birds moving inland re easy pickings, he can dispell that one quite easy.
