Has the post on AN Facebook page been removed?

It does seem to have disappeared from my end!

But I have made my feelings clear on my wall!

John Wilson?, Tony B'Liar?, the Angling Truss?...oh well, enough supposition, off to read a book now that I was given for christmas...don't know if anyone's heard of it...1984?...George Awful or something like that..... Until anglers stop believing that there's a secret organisation breeding and releasing otters all over the place, this will carry on.

Blimy. Seems there's been a hell of a storm blowing on this thread which has pretty passed me by because I've been preoccupied elsewhere.

I've read the first half of this thread, and watched the BBC West report of the fascist barbel fishermen who do not wish to tolerate otters on the Bristol Avon because they have decimated the non native, artificially introduced barbel population.

Good, I'm glad the otters are eradicating the non native barbel from the Bristol Avon.

But it annoys me that the otters cannot be harvested on a sustainable basis, because the pelts are worth serious money. I resent the fact that the Americans, the Canadians, the Scandinavians, and the Russians are all selling pelts on the international market, but we're not able to harvest our own natural resourses on a sustainable basis in return. As long as it's done in a humane manner then what's the problem?

I feel the same way about foxes.

I don't wan't to hunt any species to extinction. But hunting has never seriously threatened either of these species, and I don't see why we can't recognise that these species are established, therefore they can harvested in a sustainable way.

I think the Govt should allow the Environment Agency to issue trapping licenses on a catchment-by-catchment basis

Do you really think that Otters are that established that they could be taken and still have a viable population?

EDIT: I think people see Otters where they are no Otters, are there really as many of them out there as some would have us believe?

Andy, contrary to popular belief (well, that of crap anglers and the daily blurb), otters are still not common in the UK but are expanding their range and, hopefully, building their numbers to become our top native apex (aquatic habitat) predator. I would be very surprised to see licensed hunting of otters before otters had reached peak population numbers which is probably decades away....given that according to some anglers, fish numbers are so low otters will not achieve maximum sustainable population status for many decades to come....if at all.

In the meantime, calls for culls of a protected native species by narrow-minded single non-native species/specimen huggers will just bring every tree/bird/mammal/fish hugger out in paroxysms of rage demanding the banning of angling.....To be honest, the way it's going with this almost fascist atitude of some (and I hesitate to use the word) 'anglers' I'd be more inclined to back them than muddy puddle crap anglers if they're intent on trying to kill wildlife rather than enjoy it on a natural basis!

A few minutes of deliberation and....

Due to the aforementioned selfish 'angler-style orientated people' we now have compulsory C+R imposed on us, what next with thes ar5ehole plonkers who are leading us towards a (quite rightly) general public fuelled fury against all anglers? Let's nip this in the bud and separate ourselves (as anglers) from mindless fools who propose such anti-angling idiocy...?
