Some interesting speculation on another forum about what killed this:

 

That would be foreign anglers they only eat the bit behind the head and throw away the rest :D

 

But apart from the bit that obviously looks chewed, it looks like a very neat cut along the skin, looks like it was done with a scalpel. I think it was medical students during rag week.

Judging by the cut and peeled back skin it looks to me like some biologist has dissected it to remove the otolith bone to me! But whether this was before or after the chunk was taken out of the throat I obviously cant tell.

 

AND in my mind that's the problem with a lot of these "Who killed Pi$$wings" photos...............we dont know how the fish actually died! Was it killed by whatever subsequently ate it or did it die of some other cause? Not that I really give a hoot as its simply nature at work and its only selfish anglers who cant accept that.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Yes, the clean slice is the peculiar thing, and suggestive that it was killed and then scavenged.

 

One theory is that it got wrapped in braid...

 

(When I used to take otoliths out of carp, I went in through the sunroof, too much bone and tough connective tissue to make it easy to get in via the base of the skull ;) )
