Are new anglers expectations too high?

I guess it depends on "who's ox is gored". Addict says "facts" (and, personally I dispute his), well, if you throw enough chit at the wall some will stick. But in general - and FACTUALLY - all you have to do is consider the economic impact of angling in commerce (1980 - 2012).

 

For some, "success" might just be measured by getting out of the house in the name of fishing - thus saving an otherwise troubled marriage.

 

Do they, other anglers, do it "right"? Well, if Androo can't always do it right (IMO) how can I expect a newbie to do it right. As a stand alone expert, it's lonely being at the top. I do my best to train the uninformed in a kind and gentle way.

So true. The journey is everything, the end result is often something of an anticlimax, even if it's a big fish. The big fish is really pleasing, but nevertheless it means the journey is over. However, the mags tell you the big fish is the only thing that matters.

 

Personally, there are two things I always hope won't happen - a really big fish by accident; and an aim achieved too quickly. What really matters to me is solving all the little puzzles along the way, and if/when I finally catch what I think is achievable from the water, knowing exactly why I caught it.

 

If I was playing golf, a random hole in one from a wild and lucky shot wouldn't feel anything like a hole in one following loads of practice and effort. (Even less so if the hole was moved closer to the tee and made 20 times as big )

how can I expect a newbie to do it right. As a stand alone expert, it's lonely being at the top. I do my best to train the uninformed in a kind and gentle way.

I know I am a grumpy old git and I stand in good company on that score around AN

 

Phone, I don't mind people asking questions and some times I will even try to answer and help. I'm not claiming my advice is good or even right but I do or well did not mind offering it.

 

But some not all who ask questions don't really seem to want fishing advice about how to catch using a certain method or style of venue. They want specific details of where to catch a big fish and what method/bait to use in that spot. Which is a whole different ball game to asking a more general fishing question. These are the topics that often start "I am going to and what are the best swims and bait"and seem to drop off the front page with no or very few answers.

 

It's good to offer advice and guidance to new anglers but some expect more then a little advice and it does seem to be those who have set themselves huge targets.

Dont give up so easily - my method is to take a £20 note with me each session, roll it in a ball throw it in the air and then catch it - on a windy day best done inside the bivvy

Uuumm look closely you are all missing the point.

 

They are daiwa's you can tell by the line clip I think they may be tournaments and look at the way they are all perfectly lined up.
