Budgie - ouch on that hook not holding up. I normally use Gamakatsu Octopus circle hooks or, less often, Owner circle hooks, and have never had one of them fail on me even with a 25 lb channel cat from a river on a #8.

As a side note, I wanted some circles smaller than #8 for Jan to use on the small bluegills in our local lake and bought some Eagle Claw hooks in #10, #12, & #14. Sadly she died before they arrived but I've tried them several times and they work well. Only small fish so not sure how tough they are.

This post has probably been the most difficult I have ever written for AN.

I have thought long and hard what to write and the time has come to just say it from the heart because clever words and comments are just not coming to me. I am not the best writer in the world being an old country boy but am honest and faithfull.

Obviously like everyone before me I would like to say thanks to all those that helped me. Terry taking me to my swim but not just as a delivery man but friendly chatty and helpfull. His daughter checking on us with Terry at nights for fishing reports being genuinely interested.

I did not partake in the barbeques as I wanted to fish 24/7 as I do this type of thing most weekends and get in my routine. However Sunday I wanted a walk around and chose the end of food time to do so. It was a fantastic and long walk allowing me to view many fantastic sites around wingham and chatting to several fellow anglers and even dog walkers on the footpath.

I arrived at the dedication of the wisteria to Jan and a very poignant moment. I was touched at budgie's speech and the general love for another person.

I then had a long chat with both Dales, whom I have met once before, Budgie and tincatinca. Something I now know I want to repeat before I am to old to do so.

Steve spent a good time chatting with me and felt we were kindred spirits and as the weekend went on that feeling was more so.

On the fishing front I caught 2 good tench lots of pike and 2 good eels. I know if I had wanted to catch more eels I could but I needed the sleep to drive home.

This weekend will be in my memories for a long time and will influence my fishing forever.

The wildlife and bird song I can still hear.

I will stop writing now as the emotion the weekend has stirred up within me has made my eyes run with tears and I cannot remember anything doing that for a long time.

Mr Burke see what you have done you have made a tough old country boy into a blithering idiot.

Kindest regards to all

John

Cant remember the make of the hook (circle, I used but will check next time I have my box out.I dont think it was Seiko but similar? ) but it was very fine wire and I was absolutely amazed that it held up so well with both the carp and eels! Glad I got round to trying them for eels at last and I will definitely continue to do so.After a few dozen more eels should be able to make a more informed decision.Keep a look out for some strong small (8's and below) for me mate!

A lot of carp anglers have been amazed what that eel did to quite an accepted "strong" carp hook!

Just done a quick "search" on here and they are Sakuma hooks reccomended by Renrag (see I remembered that bit right after all!) Thanks for that Renrag!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

John, Wingham has that affect on a lot of people, so you're not alone. I well remember what it did to Paul (tincatinca), who came to a Fish-In and is now a member. Those who haven't been can't fully understand it. Once they have, many do. For them just being at Wingham is enough, catching its fish is but a bonus.

John mentioned that I'd posted before that we seemed to be kindred spirits. Once we met that seemed even more so. In fact, it seemed as if I'd known John for ages. Yet, although we have so much in common, everything was new and I could certainly learn a lot from John.

It's a shame you live so far away as I'd love to see what you could achieve at Wingham.
