help for someone thinking of moving to England

Right folks, first post for quite some time, so treat me gentle.

Imagine you were moving to England after many years living away, with a family between the ages of 5 and 15. You want to be able to do a whole range of fishing, coarse, game and sea, you are not a mad keen carp nut, but want good general fishing for a range of species, and plenty of easy fishing to introduce your young children to.

You are going to be renting housing, not buying.

Work is going to be low paid, possibly call centre work, maybe IT support, possibly general admin, but nothing highly qualified or high paid.

You have the whole of England to choose from.

Where do move to and why?

Worcester.

Reasonable housing costs, The Severn, Avon and the Teme on the doorstep and miles of all three available on a low priced BAA card along with several local stillwaters. Pools, the Teme and it's tributaries available for trout on the fly. Salmon at Dinglis. Cod fishing in the Bristol Channel in winter and thornies in the spring not to far and has good motorway links. Clearwater sea fishing in Devon and Cornwall isn't to far away in the summer.

Carlisle. It's only 10 miles from the border.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

The Yorkshire dales! Crime is as good as it gets. A lot of prospects for self employment and LOTS of load paid work. LOTS of cheap housing as no-one will live there (Similarity to Scotland?) as it is so FAR from anywhere. And it is where I am going to settle IF we do move back to the UK IF this **** continues with the French social services!!

And it is in GODS own county!!

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

Norfolk/Cambridgeshire

Norfolk has superb wildlife and fishing with a lot of employment chances for admins in small schools as well as IT. Support etc

If you move closer to Cambs then it is considered one of the IT capitals of the UK with shed loads of it based jobs and helpline support requirements...living in villages within a 30 min commute would result in cheap rent as well as allowing countryside living.

Cost of living is cheap as well.

Well kirisute, thank you for your suggestion, having been down for a weeks holiday just to get re-acquainted with the area it is just what we need. Nice wide open spaces which we like, plenty of job opportunities, lots of decent price rental properties, good fishing within easy reach. Jill and the kids all think it would be a good area to move to so the serious looking around begins. Probably looking to the north of Cambridge, and not wanting to be in Peterborough, but still gives a wide area to consider.

I'm starting job hunting from now, and will move down as soon as I find the right opportunity, also started doing an open university course to refresh my skills and hopefully increase my employability and earnings potential. Looking at contracting opportunities to start with, again to help to refresh the skill set. No rush to get anything as it will be June 2014 before the whole tribe can make the move south as that fits best with the elder kids schooling.

So watch out cambridgeshire - we're heading your way!

Nick - you don't mention the age of your offspring but if any are near the (sorry - I don't know the proper UK terms) top grade and graduation, you probably want to move them sooner rather than later if your new location is to become home to you for any length of time.

"It will be better to let them finish their last last year where they have their friends", seems reasonable but it pretty well assures they won't ever really consider your new location as home. School is a great place to meet & socialise and make friends. Later, when it's a matter of go to work or go to university, it's a lot harder.

It's always good to see you posting again.
