Killing fish

. If fishing for Carp then it makes sense to have unhooking mats etc but if wandering rivers etc targeting other fish then it would be stupid to drag one around just incase. All we can expect is to have appropriate gear for the species we are after and the enviroment we are fishing. I think in general most people know what is and is not appropriate for the fishing they do.

I agree with that too, but not everyone does, you may remember not too longh ago, we debated this and I got some stick for saying that I don't carry a mat when 'wandering' and using lure/spinners. On one water I fish the rules dictate that a net must be carried, so I take a little American style 'dip net', it wouldn't do to land any pike over 2lbs with, it would be ok to land a decent perch with, which is always on the cards with that type of fishin', but carrying the net keeps me within the rules. I do have a pike net, it's one of those good huge 'Savage gear' rubberised mesh (no tangles), but it's only for use on the boat, shore fish get 'chinned out' and frequently get no where near the ground anyway.

I break their necks.:(

With a Karate chop, .........deadly :)

Oh I do have a 'priest' inherited the thing from a fluff chucker, never used it and it's in the garage somewhere, never seen a coarse angler with one in his kit, seems a bit old fashioned, handling procedures and respect for fish have come a long way.

You don't really need one John :D

Well thay certainly have changed, and I expect lots of anglers go about feeling very pleased with themselves thinking (but not too deeply) that they are right up there on fish welfare.

I will always carry my priest, and i belive that those who say they will never need one are kidding thmselves.

Mine is a bit like my lifejacket I suppose I always wear one when afloat yet have never fell in or capsised by boat, but one day perhaps I will.

Dales,

Exactly how I killed the last fish that died (knowingly) at my hands. Off target species and I was totally "undergunned". Water was 80's plus. I swam it for a few minutes and eventually it "floated" in a swimming motion out of my hand. Didn't have a chance but at least it died out of my sight.

Also, some fish I "kill" then put back I wouldn't allow my dog to eat. I fish some pretty slimball waters for carp.

Also, also, I'm 75 but perhaps you did not know or hadn't noticed that none of the aquatic animals (fish) have a neck. They go directly from the head to the body. Have I missed something?

Emma two,

Actually I wasn't exactly sure? Catfish sorta kinda have an area I wouldn't be afraid to call a neck - really short neck though. You're way is the old way. I approve.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

Yes, I remember that. Sometimes I do wonder do some people actually do any practical fishing. Common sense is a dying virtue.

I tend to take the point of view that if the fish has any chance of survival then it goes back to take its chances. I feel uneasy at the thought of taking life intentionally like that. If the fish goes on to die then as has been said it will soon become assimilated back into the eco system. If it doesn't die then all the better. It may seem a bit of backward logic as I endanger the fish in the first place by fishing but I go out of my way to make sure I do not leave the fish in a bad state. I am the same with any creature. I try my best not to take any life as it isnt my place to.

Nah, that's how you deal with rabbits :) - hold 'em up by their hind legs and chop down at the base of the skull. In my teens used to supplement my income with ferrets and nets, and lost count of the number of rabbits sold for half-a-crown apiece to the local butcher.

Breaking trouts' necks by putting a thumb on the roof of the mouth and jerking the head backwards is probably the most humane method of dealing with trout you intend to eat. As far as I am concerned "intend to eat" means river brown trout over 10" long up to about a pound and a half - any smaller (or bigger) get put back. As I am usually wading a small stream whilst trout fishing, any fish returned never touch the ground - in fact most never even leave the water. A small pair of artery forceps to grip the hook, a turn of the wrist, and the fish is off.
