Weather - its gonna be a wild ride for the NE US

A potentially historic Nor'easter
is brewing for the Northeast U.S., where blizzard watches are up for
much of eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The storm,
dubbed "Nemo"
by the Weather Channel, is expected to bring heavy snows of 1 - 2 feet,
coastal wind gusts over hurricane force, and moderate to major coastal
flooding. During the peak of the storm, Friday night into Saturday
morning, snowfall rates of 2 - 3" per hour can be expected. These
intense bursts of snow may be accompanied by lightning and thunder. The
cites of Boston,
Hartford, Providence, Portland, and Burlington are all likely to get
more than a foot of snow, and two feet of snow will probably fall along a
swath from the western suburbs of Boston to Southwest Maine. With the
Nor'easter generating these heavy snows expected to bomb out with a
central pressure of 972 - 976 mb, the rapid flow of air around this low
pressure center will generate ferocious sustained winds near 50 mph at
the coast, with wind gusts in excess of hurricane force--74 mph. The
combination of heavy snow and high winds will make travel extremely
dangerous or impossible, with near-zero visibility in white-out
conditions. Total snowfall from the storm is likely to rank in the top
ten for Boston since weather observations began at Logan Airport in
1936.

Am I ever glad I live south of the snow area!!!

I am i glad i live in the UK as well. it was bad enough 2 weeks ago here. i would be confined to the house if we had that here. despite the intense cold getting in my stoma in my neck i would be afraid of falling over and getting snow in my neck now. (i am a total neck breather for those that dont know)

Yep, looks like they're taking no chances and telling people straight up to stay off the streets.

The Ice storms that they get up that way are probably more damaging but this is going to cause major disruption.

Hell's Bell's man, I'd be for staying inside and looking out the windows on occasion and I don't have your medical issues. 75mph winds driving snow is not fit weather for man or beast.

sounds like a pretty fierce beast bearing down on the NE! Combination of warm moist air from south and the nor'easter with serious cold combining to make a monster. Hope people in the north eastern states heed the advise to stay indoors.

I have just been reading about this ,Bank of America warning people to get cash out of the ATM's people being advised not to leave home ,over 2,000 flights cancelled all for a superstorm dumping 2/3 foot of snow ..... we have a met office warning out for Sunday for 4 inches of snow,

the article said a foot of snow possibly for N.York and 2 foot for Boston...... what the hell would happen in a foot of snow were to fall in London with all those southern sofftees,

I'm not sure under all these over the top safety rules

1) a ruler a foot long could be carried

2) going out with said ruler into snow would be allowed

3) by the time the paperwork was filled in there would be no show to measure if indeed the first two criteria was allowed

Bad news for them Phone and the cost of recovery will be bad news for us all.

- Ferry service through much of the NE - stopped until probably Sunday

- Airline service - over 3000 flights canceled and many more delayed

- Mass transit - most have shut down by mid-afternoon Friday to resume ... as soon as possible but maybe Sunday

- and so on

3 ft of snow, winds to 75mph, and seas 20-30 feet are expected along much of the NE coast with some to near 40 ft at the worst part of the storm. Luckily the peak of the storm surge is expected at about the time of low tide so overall flooding may not be severe.
