I used a product called Pit Paste when I restored a cork handled rod a couple of years ago, Budgie (the fountain of knowledge) put me onto it;

You don't get much for your money but it goes a long way and the repairs I made are still good. The best way to clean a cork handle is simply a good scrub with washing up liquid, it'll come up like new.

I used to make a filling paste with cork dust (saved from shaping cork handles) and balsa cement. It hardens quickly, so don't make too much at once !

rudd ,you must be psychic ,i'm in the process off putting something together on this ,but its in the early stages ,i'm still collating pictures and stuff ,adding them as i go along, doing a bit more each night .

like Vagabond i usually make my own filler from cork dust ,left over from floatmaking ,just mix it with waterproof pva glue (blue bottle from B&Q etc) and fill the voids ,leave overnight then sand smooth next day.Cork dust is available from e-bay

sometimes i prefer to cut out the groove with a sharp blade into a regular shape then cut a chunk of crumble (broken bits & pieces of old cork ,saved from other projects /repairs/scrap handles) to shape and superglue into the recess .then trim flat with a sharp blade and a bit of final sanding (300grit) to smooth finish .great for any chipped or void .

I have just part stripped down 2 old Kevin Maddocks KM2 rods which were originally built on Sportex blanks by Simpsons of Turnford. At some time in the past, the original reel fittings must have broken and were replaced by being bonded to the original handles with what appears to be a liberal use of epoxy. Anyway, I have decided to strip off the old handles completely and replace with fuji reel seats and cork so the question is where can good cork shives be obtained in todays world. I can find plenty for fly rods but very little in larger bore sizes so any suggestions would be appreciated.
