They're thankfully rare and nothing like the ones you get generated by the 'super cell' thunderstorms out on the plains. If someone lost a roof to one over here it would be news-worthy

Per square mile I gather that the UK actually gets more tornados than anywhere in the world!

However, as Chris said, they're not nearly as powerful as those in the States and cause a lot less damage. Having said that we seem to be experiencing somewhat worse tornados than we used to, although still way behind the US ones. Some pundits reckon this is more evidence of global warming.

By golly you're right Steve - It was recognized by the American Scientist Dr. Ted Fujita (who devised the F-Scale) that the UK has more tornadoes per unit area than any other country in the world. Apparently 'we' average 33 per year with the maximum recorded in recent years of 150 in 1982. Many more per square mile than the US - just thankful we don't get (m)any biggies!!!!

hmmm the thought of an F5 tearing through certain areas of this country ain't a bad one though.

i reckon one along a certain embankment in London wouldn't upset to many people :D

I'd love to go storm chasing across the great plains, but then again i always have been a "bit" mad (shut it wordbender).

I saw one in a field once. Some bits of straw must have gone up more than twenty feet.

In 1996 I happened to be looking out of my front window across the building site that eventually became our neighbourhood, when I saw a mini-tornado sweeping across the end of our road, it sucked up the contents of a builders skip, timber, plaster board, debris and such and dropped the lot over a wide area within a hundred yards, then it was gone...

I shall never forget the sight a mix of surprise and wonder... awesome.
