A cause for concern?

That's a big drop. Are they just not buying licences, or, (as I suspect), just getting bored with the angling on offer?

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Most likelya bit of both, blanking on natural waters and ##### in the woods can be a bit of a turn off for kids.

gozzer,

Perhaps the "nature" of angling in the UK is becoming far to serious endeavoUr. Kids like to have fun. How long do you think it would take for a novice to learn the "rules of the road" in angling in the UK?

Edit: Where do "adult" licenses come from? Are "family" members also on the decline? Something doesn't pass the smell test if fathers are still buying licenses.

I don't think the summer/autumn/winter/spring of 2012/13 helped one iota. I know my fishing trips halved to their normal due to the dire weather. Getting back into it this season though, even catching some fish!

For various reasons, it is just more difficult for kids to go fishing these days. There is no free fishing whatsoever locally, compared with hundreds of waters I could fish as a kid without let or hindrance.

Over-protective parents, litigation-conscious farm managers, control-freak councils, busybodies everywhere going on about 'elf and safety - we have lost the culture of letting kids loose to play, go fishing, or learn about life.

...and cost - whatever happened to improvising with what you have, and making your own tackle? Now there are so many expensive "must have" items that angling periodicals insist are essential.

...much safer to confine kids indoors to play computer games :nerd::nerd::nerd:

Spot on, Dave.

Why are we even charging children to go fishing? Do we charge them to kick a ball about, or to go bird watching or canoeing? A concessionary licence costs £5 - is that even profitable to collect and enforce? I rather suspect that it isn't.

Numbers coarse fishing seem a lot lower these days anyway, not just kids. Club membership has shrunk, banks are empty compared to years ago. Unless everyone is sitting around the carp-stuffed lakes, fishing appears less popular.

I have to tell you I live 1,100 miles from an ocean. I suspect they are a lot more important on the seacoast. I was in my 20's before I knew what a life jacket was. I was ( to be politically correct) "instructed" to be out of sight til supper. Today I would be a daily "amber alert".
