I can hear the cries of horror even as I write this but is there a predatory fish that could be introduced to control Crays?

 

It might be a case of the women who swallowed a fly and what would you then introduce to control that predator but do Crays reach these plague proportions in their native countries.

 

They have over run large sections of the river Lee and while it produces super big Chub and Perch that have no doubt got big on a diet including Crays these fish are few and far between with even fewer back up fish. At some point these big Chub will either die of old age or from a case of BBQ and so on a water like the Lee with its all problems including the Crays would adding a sporting predator fish to control the Crays be such a bad thing?

 

It sounds drastic and a bad idea at the moment but say a larger catchment area was to decline at what point would it be viable if at all to push for an introduction of an alien species

 

How about Maccullochella peelii ?

There are white claw breeding centres, so I don't see why there are such stringent restrictions on the trapping of crayfish,especially in areas overrun by signals. How much of a dent it would make in

Well if they became plague proportions like the Crays, then they could be harvested for the fur trade. Make everyone some nice gloves and hats to combat the cold winters.

They already have one. Koi herpesvirus (KHV) is a highly contagious virus that causes significant morbidity and mortality in common carp (Cyprinus carpio).

Yes, but it's not so potent in our climate Phone.

Maybe a bit of 'Global Warming' would help?

 

I think F1s are immune as well, so we would need a 'bigger gun'.

I must admit I would love to catch one of them but maybe down under is the place to try but I could almost be tempted to tip a tank of them in to my local river just to wind up Gozzer.

Like KHV, I don't think they would like our climate Stephen, that's apart from them being endangered because of Phones beloved fish.

 

Still, with the size they get, it would be something else to blame for attacks on dogs and small children.

Fair point but i like my crayfish armour posing pouch its very fetching in profile ,trouble is though we cant hunt otters and mink with hounds so i guess we should form some crayfish hounds but i guess it wouldnt be as entertaining as hunting animals

Murray cod are a temperate species They will hapily live alongside (and prey upon) trout and redfin (European perch). I've watched them feeding when the frost has been lifting in the morning - never did manage to stick a hook in one though.

 

Golden perch (yellowbelly) might be another option but they probably wouldn't find our climate warm enough.

In terms of mass feders that solely feed on them . Other fish do est them when and as but nothing only targets them as a good source

Chop them up and take out the tail. Throw back the rubbish (legs etc) as the attractor. Then use the tail section as the bait. I used to take off the scaley skin but it appears to make no difference if it is left on or taken off. Perch love it. If you leave the tail as a whole section the smaller perch struggle with it, but they still try! If you cut up the tail other species will also show an interest.

It is illegal to use crayfish of any speicies as bait.
