Eel Record

Does anyone in the forum know of a place which could contain a new british record eel. The current record is 11lb-02oz-00dr.

Also does anyone believe it can be beaten at all.

It has been bettered by an eel of almost 13lb I believe. The fish came from a water with a no publicity policy and known as a carp water. As the captor cannot publish the photos he cannot claim the record.

There was a debate about this very subject on here during November/October you'll find details in the search mode at the top of the page

Information from Fishbase.org.

"133 cm TL (female); max. published weight: 6,599 g".

That's a little over fourteen and a half pounds.

Even if we look at the unofficial fish as the benchmark, there's still better than a pound to go before we get to limit - even if we assume that Fishbase's upper limit is as big as they can get.

I vaguelly remember watching some programme about nessie hunters one evening (no i dont think nessie is a giant eel) but one thing they did discover when they sent cameras into the depths of the lochs where quantities of large freshwater eel which for some reason they reckoned hadnt headed back to the sargasso to spawn, So maybe one of these lochs might be a possibilty.

everytime i catch a fish i'm lucky when i blank i'm a hopeless angler.

I dont think there will be a record eel for a while, Not until the stocks are boosted. But I do think there are eels in this country that are bigger than the record, Big eels are normally traped in a lake. I think the record will slip to a carper in some huge gravel pit. I suspect most records will one day be held by carpers. Josh :)

Big eels are normally traped in a lake.

Do you mean caught in a trap in a lake or in a lake that they can't get out of?

I can't imagine the latter!

Jim I think Josh is refering to the "Prison water" theory that a lot of eel specialists subscribe to.Not sure about it myself but one thing Im sure about is that despite eels being undoubtedly able to live out of water for some time and equally undoubtedly be theoretically able to move across land,I nor any one I know have ever seen it!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!
