Not in the context of Wealden sandstones

Some Wealden sandstones contain very little iron (they are white or pale yellow) Other sandstones contain various concentrations of iron and depending upon how much iron, the colour ranges from deeper yellow, through orangy -brown, to a dark red rusty colour. It takes very little iron to impart quite a deep colour - and the iron is usually not economically worth extracting.

In the Weald, the "ironstone" is usually a clay-ironstone - the commonest (and thickest) being in the Wadhurst Clay.

ah i see we have lots of sand here but i expect its not suitable for building as although its hard it not tremendously hard and may not last long as blocks .

its obviously been used for something theres lots of sanstone quarries possibly to get the ironstone as it seems everywhere in buildings of age here .

our iron stone seems to be water deposited as many bits are tubes and curved pieces from larger tubes so i guess water filtered through the sand in rivulets laying down the ironstone on the sides of the tunnels.

theres a discussion here

I'm sure this isn't the first time you have noticed that when you are expert in a subject you find a lot of nonsense written about it. Doesn't it make you wonder how much of what isn't your area of expertise is also nonsense?

Yes, very often.

You only have to watch a news item about angling (hopefully we all know a little about that), they are usually fairly cringe-worthy.

In this situation, (Vagabond's), I would send them an email pointing out their error, and say I await their comments with interest.

"""" In UK the Pike Perch is seen as a pest"""

Old news, or to be more accurate, old journalistic scaremongering.

I remember the panic "it will eat all our native fish" as the initial population explosion in the fens took place, but as with any other predator, a predator/prey ratio soon became established.

An angling journalist achieved some notoriety some years after the initial panic by conducting a one-man war against zander and pike.
