armed police

Hi all

 

hope this doesnt get heated but here goes

 

i was watching a prog the other week about how are police force still treds the beat unarmed and that times have changed very considerably since the 50-60-70-80 you get the point

 

i know armed cops have taken a beating with regards to making errors in the heat of the moment but that aside i think its about time things changed

 

unlike other countrys we are still denying are good cops with usefull protection bar cs spray/stabvests

 

how many would say that they would be a cop in this day and age with the way things are?

 

i know i may appear short sighted but with less and less joining because of the dangers whats it gonna be like ten years from now

 

 

i dont condone gun crime but do think are dcops need to be on a level playing field when racing to a robbery

 

 

just a thought but id vote yes sorry

The problem however is that most police do not want to be armed. I'm pretty sure I've spoken to coppers who've said if they had to be they'd leave the force.

 

I am however with you in that all police should be armed, if they want to be. It goes without saying that they should all be highly trained to use said firearms, in the same way the current armed response officers are.

 

As the general public however, we have to accept there will be more accidental shootings by the police, but I for one accept that as a small price to pay.

yes give them all guns and adopt a shoot to kill policy any nutter who goes out armed in any way deserves all they get which should be a wooden overcoat no expense incurred to keep them in prison or lengthy trials and last minute aquitals on technicalities

but got to agree with you

 

if you don't carry then you have no problem with the law

 

as long as you do as your told (IE. the tube shooting) you'll be ok

 

and if they do arm them all i would support it

i think that uk police should be armed..but their training would have to be a lot better than it appears to be now.

i had a friend who was shot dead in 1972, when he tried to arrest a gang robbing a casino, he was shot in cold blood in the face.(when he wasnt policing he was president of our fishing club)

Billy I am glad you have given us the opportunity to share our points of view on this subject

 

I voted no, while gun crime is on the increase it is not encountered by the average bobby on patrol. the majority of crime is not gun related, coupling that with the fact that the gun is a very powerful tool and serves one purpose to kill period. I would not recommend it at this present time. What I would suggest is Increasing substantially the number of armed response units in areas where gun crime is an issue.

UK Firearms officers are trained to a very high standard, they are mentally strong and have a high level of fitness they are tested regularly psychologically and for competence. they are more than your average bobby.

I take it you are referring to the Menezes shooting. When did he 'not do as he was told'? AFAICR he was not challenged by the Police before they decided that they had to shoot him in the head 6 or so times.

As others (including a serving officer) have already posted, the majority of our police do not wish to carry a firearm 100% of the time. I defer to their better judgment on this issue.

 

The old 'if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear' argument does not wash. This was the mantra of the NKVD, KGB, STASI and their ilk.

the thread is still here yippie!

 

good arguments for and against so far and i totally agree that most cops dont wish to be faced with such a hard choice but if it was me id be armed to the teeth and not affraid to protect myself.

 

i know that a small minority has been victim of mistaken shots but tbh id just lay my a** on the ground with arms outstretched and id be confident of the officers around me.

 

on the other hand if i got a slug because of one officers slip of the finger then thats that!fair play

 

also these specials need extra respect for being mad enough to risk the same fate as the female officer shot dead a while back(name slips me sorry)

 

what number does it have to rise to before its mandatory to carry either stun or real arms

guns later stun guns now!!!

 

try or fail it will happen soon enough

 

cops have lost too much respect and this happend before the most of the accident shootings.

 

rubber or stun seems to be the latest thing but so far most police stations around are country cannot afford them yet!
