frustrating session..

Recommended Posts

Set out to catch barbel on the float, it was my intention last season but I never properly got round to it. Fished Tuesday evening and had around 30 chub/trout/dace but no barbel, early start this morning fishing a stretch I've only fished once before and had 23 trout in 6 or so hours biggest around 3lb. Not a bad return but frustrating Nonetheless as I just couldn't seem to avoid them! Part of me is saying I'm on the right tracks as I'm catching regularly but I still feel I'm missing something!

Shouldn't beat yourself up over it, they are probably spawning best leave it alone until they have done the deed.

Out last night on the Warks Avon, and it was tough, no bites from the middle so chucked a load of hemp and bits of meat under a willow near bank, and within two minutes I was in to a huge chub, tipped the scales at 7.2, incredible fish and in good condition.

That'll be the barbel Viney ;) .

I don't know what your using as bait but maybe try a bait change and see if that helps.

Had my first session of the new season on the Thames, hoping for barbel. Had four chub to 4-6 and a couple of brownies. The chub were still on the shallow gravels, pre or post spawning.

Well done, must have been fun, a proper bit of jungle fishing!! Lovely looking bit of water Steve, what is that mark on the second chub?

Sorry Viney, got distracted from the original question :D

Maggots should be fine as bait, the trout can be a real problem these days as there are so many of them in some of our rivers. I'd guess OTIB (huge chub BTW!) is on the right lines with the barbel probably spawning.

Just a bit thin on the ground at the moment - I usually like to get a few on the float each summer too. Managed just one last season - none so far this (in 2 attempts in likely swims of old!). Trotted maggots - you might need to trickle in quite a bit over several hours to get them going - then action can be brisk. The trouble these days is I'm not confident they are even in the swim to start with! :(

Looks like a strand of waterweed to me.

Nice catch Steve, and good photos..

It was, though the nettles and thistles had grown enormously since I fished there for trout in the spring, and I wore trousers which were too thin to fend them off.

Just a bit of weed on the fish.
