Hiya, They are not allowed to dump tyres in landfills anymore as the biggest component of a tyre is oil. A scrappie pal of mine tells me it costs him £1 per tyre to get rid of them off old cars, they go to a specialist contractor who incinerates them in a special type (dont ask me what) of blast furnace, the smoke is filtered etc, there was some idea a few years ago of using them to fuel power stations, but I think that proved too costly, they are also fragmented, and the particles are reused to make mud flaps, car mats etc. This I know still happens.

Cheers

surely you have seen the door mats and other great stuff made from them in the far east ,and hundreds of people eking? out an existance on poor rubbish dumps surely as a caring rich country we should export all our tyres and household rubbish to these countries ,you know it makes sense ,as a good measure send them used oil ,petro chemical waste ,spent uranium ,old weedkiller and cadmium ,arsenic, cfc`s and old fridges to make houses etc .we could have a giant collection centre after all if they still use DDT and thalidomide why not other banned substances

Whilst trekking on foot through the African bush and miles from the nearest track, we kept coming across fragmented tyre prints about nine inches to a foot long (ie not continuous tracks) wherever there was a bit of soft ground.

These weren't off-road 4WDs running on kangaroo petrol, but the local Samburai who cut up old tyres and use them as sandals.

I used to be in the tyre game, and one reason for leaving it was the ever increasing cost of disposal. As it's probably the most competitive trade around, it was difficult to get consumers to pay a realistic price for tyres and their disposal.

I used to pay 75p a casing back in 1999 so I assume the cost is now higher, but because someone was all ways willing to cut the prices even more, it was difficult to get that charge back from the customer.

It was also a trade that paid low wages, so to stay competitive wages stayed low.

The old casings were taken to a plant near Wolverhamton for burning to make electricity, however the company running it I beleive packed it in when a new line into the National grid was needed, but the cost made it unviable. So now we have tyre dumps bigger than ever. The damn things are toxic so probably not a good idea to use in water, perhaps the sandal idea might catch on here.

Some guy developed a super burner that burned the smoke as well, but you had to hand feed one tyre at a time and I think it took 15 mins to burn each one, so I don't think that caught on either.

One day perhaps someone will come up with an idea that works. Or perhaps we should stop using motor vehicles that run on tyres!!
