Both ALF and PETA both consider angling to be a barbaric bloodsport whether catch and release or not (infact some of them consider catch and release to be worse than taking the fish for the table as your not even actually fishing to feed yourself only to derive pleasure from the fishes suffering).

Seepeta- fishing hurts for their opinions on both angling and commercial fishing.

Personally i consider fishing/angling a field sport along with hunting etc and have no problems with that. As for coarse fishing being different to game fishing and sea fishing because the majority (although not all) is catch and release and it being treated differently because of this, well thats the attitiude that people in PETA etc love its called divide and conquer, if they could get their way they would ban all fishing and it makes life a lot easier for them to do so by fragmenting angling into different areas and slowly eroding at one while the others look on going "well i'm alright jack."

Hi All

Angling is a blood sport same as fox-hunting,

steve

field sport yes blood sport no ,the ends different i.e no blood as in dead fish (with much as we can do to prevent death in fish ,even bad 2" perch get looked after as much as possible)

you see the clues in the word "blood"

even sea angling only borders on blood all i catch are released they are to small to kill! even hated doggies and pout are carefully returned in my case!

as said "blood sport" is an emotive saying brought up by anti's to describe everything they dislike ,if you shed blood in your quarry its either dead or great care will be made to save it if its savable or kill it if it isnt.

even fox hunters take great care to ensure no suffering takes place only pricks wound things on purpose and let them go.

in the back of my permit theres a few phone numbers for free vet treatment of injured animals found on the clubs premisses if anglers were out and out bloodthirsty louts why have them?

i have little problem killing mink they are aliens that kill anything they come across ,had i found one in any place than my pond then i would admire it for its perfect fit into what it does and leave it alone but its not supposed to be here and our wildlife cannot yet handle it so are easy prey and its mostly down to the "blood sport " shouters that its around.

strange in peta's manifesto there isnt ban the car or ban the train!! they kill and wound more animals than everyone put together i bet ,is car driving a blood sport? i know a few people that would deliberately run down an animal?

The definition of field sports is far ranging:

Field sports may also refer to field events in athletics, such as the shot put or the high jump.

A country sport or field sport is one of the traditional rural blood sports of hunting with various types of hound most commonly for fox, hare and red deer), shooting (particularly of game birds, such as grouse, partridge, pheasant and woodcock) and non game birds such as duck and snipe, fishing (particularly fly fishing) most commonly for brown trout and salmon.

It also covers clay shooting, archery, rock climbing and so on, so the term it's self is far reaching and when expanded covers angling in all forms.

Blood Sports:

Bloodsport or blood sport is a term commonly used by social reformers to describe sport or entertainment which is believed to be cruel, involving needless animal or human suffering.[1]

The term can refer to chase sports such as coursing or beagling, combat sports such as cockfighting, or other activities. It also includes spectacles that involve pitting one animal against another in a fight. These usually involve blood being drawn, and sometimes result in the death of one or more animals.

Badger-baiting

Bear-baiting

Betta-fighting

Bull-baiting

Bullfighting

Cockfighting

Cock throwing

Cricket fighting

Dog fighting

Fox hunting

Fox tossing

Gladiatoral spectacles

Hare coursing

Hog dogging

Human-baiting

Insect fighting

Rat baiting

Rat catching

Spider fighting

I do not see angling or any form of fishing in the above list.

some old geezer in the end of his years out for a bit of fishing gets chucked in whilst blind eyes are made to the real cruel practices going on in the country and town.

i would like to catch the little CCCC that keyed my car because a hunt was on in the adjoining fields

you may not see angling or fishing on that definition of a bloodsport but ask any member of ALF, PETA, or any other animal rights group if they consider angling /fishing to be a blood sport and i think you'll get only one answer and it wont be no, and remember these are the people who are trying to ban our sport not the people who write dictionaries.

On a different note wasn't mrs bobbit a champion at cock throwing?

Well as I read it Field Sports = Country Sports and believe it or not cross country running was well featured, in fact when you expand the search it included a lot of surprises.

Yes I am aware these people regard angling in all it's forms a blood sport, but it was interesting to see that those of a higher intelligence don't and the little research I did on blood sports was the same in all major encyclopedias. I would be extremely worried if angling was included.

I believe there is reason to be worried by the way extremists view our sport and don't underestimate these people by regarding them as those of a low intelligence they can be highly disciplined and very well organised (just because they disagree with your point of view doesn't make them stupid)and certainly in the case of PETA they have some quite high profile supporters.Trying to disassociate fishing/angling from other field sports will not work because these people will view our sport as a bloodsport/fieldsport whatever we call it and will only weaken any support base we may have from other field sport enthusiasts.
