Martin56 337
I've seen on Telly where Raw Steak is a great Chub bait - guess it's the cheaper stewing/shin beef?? Even cheaper if it's on "Oops quick sale shelf" or maybe a few strands of Mince on the hook?? Edited January 20 by Martin56 1 Fishin' - "Best Fun Ya' can 'ave wi' Ya' Clothes On"!! I don’t think there’s many baits that our Chub won’t eat; including big black slugs, prawns, small fry freshwater swan mussels etc. and back in the old days (when they were plentiful and it was legal) anglers used to use our native white clawed crayfish. Unfortunately we are not allowed to use the Signal crayfish or the Turkish crayfish that have spread into our waters; as bait; but no doubt our Chub (and other fish) are growing quite big on them in lots of our waters. Keith That's interesting you got them off the surface. I'll start a thread on that. john clarke
The Flying Tench 43
Wow, some amazing fish. Special congratulations to Steve and Tigger for catching an 'eight'! BoldBear, you mention Signal and Turkish crayfish. Signals were abundant and a pain when I fished the Kennet. I'm not sure if you're saying they are not so frequent now? I can't remember catching any since I've been on the Thames.. But what about the Turkish ones? This is the first I have heard of them. Are they a troublesome beast? john clarke
chesters1 1586
Signals seem to suddenly die off ,i presume they catch something but i have seen groups of dead ones in the water and on the bank in areas where only i can fish and in my bailiffing days. They are totaly unmarked but black so not deliberately killed as far as i can see ,perhaps the bug that kills ours kills some of them or ours have gone into the germ warfare game! Yes the Turkish Crays have been here in the UK almost as long as the Signals; and just as much a pain as the Signals. The Turkish Crayfish that we’re in our estate lake were there because of a lorry carrying them to restaurants which had problems with their air equipment and were given permission by some total idiot to submerge their cages into the reservoir that feeds our lake until another lorry arrived; and they shed their eggs. But they were already a pain in the bum at other uk waters as well. The Turkish Crays are roughly the same size as the Signals only their claws are much longer and pointed plus they’re not a reddish colour like the Signals claws are. Turkish and Signals don’t usually mix because of a virus that one of them carries which wipes the other species out. I can’t remember which type carries this virus. Since someone illegally stocked our estate lake with a few Wells Catfish a while ago the Crays seem to have now disappeared but we had them in our lake for many years. The Flying Tench 43
My understanding is that it is the Signals which carry a (bacterium I think) which doesn't hurt them but does so to our native crays. So from what you say it probably has the same effect on the Turkish ones. 1 john clarke

chesters1 1586
I never seen a turkish one so what kills the signals is a mystery ,i saw 50 or so dead ones at badshot lea big pond one time and they were all over the place stinking the place out ,not from traps the bailffs instructions were clear they had to be frozen then disposed of away from the water incase some viable eggs got back in ,i remember sometimes my freezer had a whole basket full of the buggers in containers ,the foxes ate well the next nights Just found a report on signals mysteriously dying https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.somersetlive.co.uk/news/local-news/hundreds-crayfish-mysteriously-die-stream-1854539.amp Edited January 23 by chesters1 Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies! Phone 750
ALL, Officially called "The Crayfish Plague" you can search either the common name or the scientific name. If you wish search the following (what I used) "Hosts and transmission of the crayfish plague pathogen Aphanomyces astaci: a review" The number of different pathogens will blow you away, but Aphanomyces astaci is the main one Phone
chesters1 1586
Yes its killing our native white claws via a disease from the signals but signals are dying from something ,its suggested its from turkish crayfish but i have never seen or caught any around here so whether it is is unknown . It doesnt mention it in the clip i read either Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!
