Is the euphoria justified?

Exactly my thoughts Ken, judging by what we have been shown on the media, he managed to pull in a few million coloured voters who had never bothered before. If that was the plan, then it was a huge success.

Not my country, but I admit to doubts, mostly to do with his colour/race. I couldn't quite get my head around the fact that there will be "coloureds" living in the White House, and if he and his family "pull it off" then it may help to rid me of my inbred prejudices. He may turn out to be the one who shows the world what real integration means, he has all the right family credentials.

I wish him well, and hope he makes a real success of the job, and who knows? he may get reelected next time.

Den

i note your use of "coloureds" ,i expect blacks regard him as white and vice versa ,then ofcourse it has to be the right sort of black ,african or caribean whatever it is they are the wrong black to either one :D

his first mistake is to employ a clinton "advisor"

lets see advice given to clinton

Military and foreign events

Three notable military events occurred during Clinton's second term. In Clinton's State of the Union Address, Clinton warned Congress of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's pursuit of nuclear weapons:

“ Together we must also confront the new hazards of chemical and biological weapons, and the outlaw states, terrorists and organized criminals seeking to acquire them. Saddam Hussein has spent the better part of this decade, and much of his nation's wealth, not on providing for the Iraqi people, but on developing nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and the missiles to deliver them. The United Nations weapons inspectors have done a truly remarkable job, finding and destroying more of Iraq's arsenal than was destroyed during the entire gulf war. Now, Saddam Hussein wants to stop them from completing their mission. I know I speak for everyone in this chamber, Republicans and Democrats, when I say to Saddam Hussein, "You cannot defy the will of the world," and when I say to him, "You have used weapons of mass destruction before; we are determined to deny you the capacity to use them again.[50]"

yup he needs clinton advisor's like a hole in the head

why do they need advisor's at all hopefully (unlike bush) he has a brain and uses it.his first job should be getting the iraq fiasco sorted ,he cant pull out en masse so he's buggered.

hopefully our shower wont lick his arse we did like the other idiot(s)

not sure how much money he used (i heard 187 mil just on advertising) so the first term will be paying back in kind all that money to get there ,favours here favours there ,contracts here contracts there ,democratic? no just greed for power and those types will promise their souls and anything else to get it.

if he wanted to help people just that money he spent on self promotion could have built a fair few stick houses for his "black" brethren in new orleans

John - the 52% Obama vote is actually pretty high. Dem wins in recent years have not even reached 51% of the popular vote and several have been lower than the Republican totals. The electoral vote decides the election and it was large but as you can see, his support among voters is not large overwhelming. (it is large)

With ours being a multi party system, we get some strange and non representative elections. On a poor turn out (say 60%), we can get a party elected with around 30% of that 60%. Which is obviously a significant minority.

Talking of multi party systems, I noticed that there was an 'others' category of around 1%. I thought that you had a two party system. Are the 'others' spoiled papers?

I feel that too much is being made of the fact that Obama is black. Listening to the reaction of people on the news it seems as if many voted as much for his colour, as his politics. (I suppose that some voted against him for the same reason).

If that was the main criteria then they might as well have voted for Will Smith or Mike Tyson.

Like Jan I was a kid when JFK came to power, I was 13 when he was shot. Even after all this time I can still remember the shock, and feeling anger and sorrow for what I felt was a 'golden opportunity' missed. (hence the "loss of 'hope" in my earlier post).

i'm afraid to say i never knew he was shot until my mum told me (for some strange reason she knew perhaps a girly thing?) ,i suspect many others profess to remember down to the minute what they were doing i dont even know what year it was ,nor really care :D

i just hope his kids are happy when they find themselves being escorted everywhere by the fbi ,not a natural way of growing up for anyone unless you marry one of the guards.

as a leader kennedy did little unless coerced and a lot brought long term harm so why the sorrow at his death?

I have not studied in any depth the racial Demographic in the states, so I can only tenetively say this based on what I read on wikipipia, and a very basic understanding of the american electorial system,So feel free to pick this to pieces but if every black vote in the USA went to Obama wich it didn't, it would not have been enough to secure him a win, this man appeals to every one who has struggled with eight years of bad governence, what the US fears more than anything is a far left goverment, not a Black man in power every one forgets the powerfull positions held by Colin Powell, and Gonderliza Rice, In fact It would appear that Gonderliza has ceased to exist.

shes keeping her head down incase her two faced dealings (along with powel) come back to hit them didnt they "advise" people also ;)

Iraq

In January 2000, Rice addressed Iraq in an article for Foreign Affairs magazine. "As history marches toward markets and democracy, some states have been left by the side of the road. Iraq is the prototype. Saddam Hussein's regime is isolated, his conventional military power has been severely weakened, his people live in poverty and terror, and he has no useful place in international politics. He is therefore determined to develop WMD. Nothing will change until Saddam is gone, so the United States must mobilize whatever resources it can, including support from his opposition, to remove him."[95]

tsk tsk how many sons died for that bitch

colin advised bush not to go into iraq and failed then merrily joined in the rush to do the opposite

powell at the UN

POWELL: What you will see is an accumulation of facts and disturbing patterns of behavior. The facts on Iraqis' behavior--Iraq's behavior demonstrate that Saddam Hussein and his regime have made no effort--no effort--to disarm as required by the international community. Indeed, the facts and Iraq's behavior show that Saddam Hussein and his regime are concealing their efforts to produce more weapons of mass destruction.

No John, there are many more political parties in the US, it's just that the two main parties get most of the vote.

Whilst I'm heartened to see Martin luther King's 'dream' come to reality, there are a few issues which bother me...

I've never understood why the colour of someone's skin, or their gender should be an issue, but Obama and the press have made it one.

Obama has been very guarded on his specifics as to how he proposes to mend the USA reputation abroad - trade policies announced seem unlikely to provide the answer to that.

As a senator, he had barely 3 months' experience in national public office - all he has proven thus far was an ability to win elections and spout rhetoric. Palin's outpourings scared me to hear, but at least she was only a VP running mate.

Ive never understood it either mate, but I do understand that it is and as A white person who by and large has had a fair crack of the whip,I wouldnt be able to comprehend what other poeple go through I can only empaththise. Why should the appiontment of someone who has risen above predudice be significant? because it gives poeple hope.

I think Ignoreing Obamas ethnicity would be difficult if nie on impossible to do, as would Ignoring McCains vetran and POW experiances and his Maturaty .Having said that I would very much Imagine that Obama would like to be rememberd as a good President rather that A black President. getting to the White House was an achievement,Being any use once your there is the challange as I see it.I am quietley confident that he hasnt been promoted above his abillity

If nothing else, it puts enormous pressure on Obama to deliver the goods. He certainly has 'talked the talk', now as they say, 'walk the walk'. As ethnicity was to an extent unavoidably made an issue by Obama, the American black population has to get its act together pretty quickly or his will be a 1 term presidency.
