Allan Stubbs - that's why the workers are protesting!! - Incapability Bown tried to hide the fact by saying that the MAJORITY of those already working there are British!!

thats because the majority of the workers on the project ARE BRITISH!!!

read below, which is the statement from TOTAL,the refinery owners.....as given to the BBC.

note the bit that says..

"there are 100 foreign workers on the new project, with a further 300 to come.

But Total says that up to 1,000 workers, employed from the local community, have already been working on the project for 18 months. "

The full statement is below...sorry KB,i dont want to be rude, but your posts are getting more confusing by the minute.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So have any UK workers lost their jobs?

Total has said that there will be no direct redundancies as a result of this contract being awarded to IREM.

It has also said that all IREM staff will be paid the same as the existing contractors working on the project.

It is understood that there are 100 foreign workers on the new project, with a further 300 to come.

But Total says that up to 1,000 workers, employed from the local community, have already been working on the project for 18 months.

Why were the jobs given to foreign workers?

We can't be sure without seeing the contracts, which are confidential.

In a similar case involving the construction of the Staythorpe power station in Nottinghamshire, the main contractor, Alsthom, has brought in Spanish sub-contractors to carry out key work involved in installing the boiler and turbine.

It is believed one of these subcontractors has its own labour force for the work, which is specialised. In such a case, the subcontractor prefers to use its own staff.

Do the unions have a legal case for challenging the recruitment of foreign workers?

A core principle of EU law is that the UK broadly accepts the right of nationals of other member states automatically to live and work in Britain.

The UK agreed to this when it joined the Common Market, as the European Union was then known, in 1973.

So it is difficult to see how anyone can challenge the right of a foreign company to bring in people from overseas to work here.

However, Unite believes it could be illegal for companies to exclude UK workers from even being considered for job vacancies, which it claims has happened during this dispute.

What are the broader implications?

The dispute has rapidly assumed a political dimension because the behaviour of the contractors appears to fly in the face of Gordon Brown's stated aim from 2007 to create "British jobs for British workers".

A government spokesman said this morning that while the PM does not regret making that statement, the government would be speaking to the industry in the coming days to ensure they do all they can to support the UK economy.

The issue has also assumed wider significance because the UK's ageing power stations system is in urgent need of an overhaul.

The Unite union reckons that 60% of our power stations will have to be replaced in the next few years. It wants to take steps now to prevent future work being awarded to firms which will bring in foreign workers.

Are the protests legal?

Any strikes called without a ballot and proper notification are counter to employment law and hence illegal.

However, the unions say these walk-outs have been spontaneous and unofficial. So they stress that while they sympathise with the strikes, they cannot support the stoppages.

How the Hell do you work that out? KB managed to confuse me with someone else and yet I was the ONLY one that offered him support of his point of view in that the Nurse was only uttering some kind words, however I feel now in light of more information that she was pushing her luck

AND personally FWIW I am a Non Believer so prayer is for others.

I do not believe in Creationalism

WHAT I do believe in is a bit of TOLERANCE and some good old fashioned RESPECT of others which is all to in short supply, at the moment.

One poster here can address young girls as slags and yet it stands, and yet a lot of you are offended by a Nurse that Prays. Sad

nurses pray? isnt that strange.

if they prey they believe god exists yet their job involves curing people ,people that obviously god makes sick for some "mysterious" reason ,i see your point .

perhaps praying is a under the counter homeopathetic "cure" like what the adverts say ,i'l have 5 please.

i often pray my mrs gets well luckily the "mysterious ways" is there ,does god not cure my mrs because i'm asking or not doing it because he doesn't like my mrs .

perhaps praying should be top shelf or invite only? but i digress! back to man hormone production please its only fair :D

and yes young girls can be slags just as some that avoid getting knocked up under the influence of a pint of shandy can become nurses praying or otherwise ,generally though respect is earned not given out like sweets ;) if you want "good old fashioned" respect it was generally beaten into people by those with the least right to it

Well, if that's the case it shouldn't be too hard to find. If you could just give me a rough idea of when all this took place and I will see if I can find it.

That will be this one then

Regarding what planet I am on, in this case I was out of country last January so it obviously didn't make the news or every paper there.

Had a quick read of the story and as I suspected it has nothing to to with the HSE

The MCA were his employers and they have laid down procedures to follow. He didn't follow the procedures and so he was criticised.

On this occasion he got away with it, and more power to him but lets just consider another couple of scenarios.

He said that the cliff supporting the girl was fragile and crumbling. He is quite a stocky sort of guy so his extra weight on a crumbling cliff edge was unlikely to improve the situation. Cliff crumbles, they both fall to their death. He is blamed, and through him the MCA, for causing the girls death.

She has been hanging on for 45 minutes so a good chance would survive another 5 minutes. He gets into a safety harness and is lowered to the girl. His extra weight causes the cliff edge to crumble and the girls starts to fall but because he is roped up he can support her and they are both pulled to safety.

Just a thought

Not sure that the number of British workers is relevant, an if Brown was trying to hide things, why take it out on Total? They acted fair, square and above board.

Why lodge a protest against the people NOT hiding things? I give up in despair...and I am in no way a Brown supporter - quite the reverse.

Chesters.

Not sure if you like smartass quotations but if you do, try:

"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?" --Epicurus
