Which species, what bait and what tactics for June 16?

Different fish are best fished for in different times of the year. And certain baits and techniques work best.

This of course depends on weather conditions matching the season.

But, tench are a popular species in spring.

In the depths of winter, when the water is at its coldest, the chub may be the only fish feeding.

With the river season now only a few weeks away, my thoughts turn to what to fish for, which baits, and which techniques.

I’m a died in the wool long trotter, using either an Avon float or stick float, with undoubtedly a couple of maggots on a size 18 hook in a search for roach, chub and dace. Very one dimensional I admit.

What plans do you all have for June 16 assuming you are going down to a river, what fish will you be targeting, and what tactics and bait will you use?

I plan to do an evening session on the Great Ouse after work for Barbel. Feed will be halibut pellet with pellet/paste/fish-meal boilie as hook baits depending on the river conditions. I might feed some swimstim black if the river's low, otherwise it's PVA bags of pellet with a semi-fixed bolt rig and 2 10mm hair rigged pellets, possibly covered with paste and boilie as a change bait.

I'm usually fishing for a species, and then decide the best method on the day. But 16th June - it has to be a float doesn't it! Trotting an avon down a small river, fishing with small hooks and maggots, watching the red tip meander downstream... What would I like to catch? It doesn't matter at all. It would be lovely to see a watervole though :)

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

June 16th will find me trotting a balsa, stick or light avon after some Chub and Barbel in the early morning; then changing to lighter tackle during the middle of the day and trying to catch some nice Roach by the reeds before switching over to a link leger after some Barbel near some far bank undercuts in the evening, followed by a few zzz's when I get home.

Baits will be Caster, Flake, 'Crab or Halibut Pellets & paste' small redworms and Chilli flavoured meat.

Thats the plan anyway.

I won't be fishing from midnight though and hope to be on the bank at around 4am ish.

Have got the whole week off so will be a nice leisurely fish & see what bites :)

No doubt the chub & barbel will be on the main target list though.

Last year i took june the 16th off and went to two rivers trotting bread and small worms had bream and some nice roach and small perch. This year i will have to work but will probably drop down to a swim on the river stort side streams after work and stalk around with a good old standby the worm.

take a look at my blog

Had a disastrous Pike spinning session last night so took a quick break to have a look along the river flowing behind the pit I was fishing. As soon as I got to the water, I spotted 4 plump chub. 100 yds further along was another as well as numerous smaller chub and roach in between.

I might waste my time in trying to find them with some bread or cheese, simple running leger rolling around; the weed looks immense already although if I find a stretch clear enough I'll have a go on the float. Fingers crossed for a sunny day.

Would love to find an elusive river Tench!

Probably trying for Cat Fish on the River Krabi in Thailand. Method is likely to be chopped fish, what ever I can pick up in the local market.

Very one dimensional I admit.

Doesn't matter, I'm in the same dimension. Trotting for me, not sure where or for what yet (as if can differentiate  ), not too bothered really as long as it's a nice day.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

It will be my first new season day for about 15 years - with the exception of this winter I've been spending most of my time fly fishing. I've rediscovered coarse fishing so for me it will be trotting - using a 'pin with a balsa or avon.

I've got the day off so will be there at 4ish. Corn, maggot, bread and lob most likely baits. Target species, not fussy really - chub, roach and barbel and perch. Might try a bit of freelined paste or meat if I spot some deep River Kennet shadows....

I hope the river doesn't flood!
