Should Carp have pet names?

What you should do is bop it over the head, put it on ice and claim the record. Once your fish has been verified, ask for it back and throw a decadent dinner party for your friends. Serve your record catch as the fish course.

The Angling Press will slaughter you, but the Anti's will love you. They don't seem to mind catching and killing them, but don't seem to like the catch and release.

Its a winner all round.

1. You get to claim the record.

2. Your friends get a slap up meal.

3. You annoy the Angling Press.

4. The fish is dead so no need to name it and no one is going to catch it next week weighing 2oz more and nick your record.

5. The Carp haters on AN will respect you.

6. Eastern Europeans & Otters will love you for taking the heat of them. Worms will be the new threat to our fish stocks.

Simples :D

Dales you're a genius!

Must get all my record fish before all coarse fish have to be returned (wonder if they've thought of record claims?) :D

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

It would also make a classic momento for the wall. Before and after photo's framed together.

One of you holding the fish up on the bank and one of you holding it up on a serving platter :D

Yes, it was exactly for that reason and at the time it was a perfectly reasonable thing to do. In fact if Dick hadn't have done that, carp fishing probably wouldn't be what it is today. Before his death, Dick confessed that if he had had an inkling of what he was going to start, he wopuld have done a lot of things differently. There was certainly nothing dodgy about what he did as has been suggested by others, he did something that was entirely acceptable in 1952 and was probably the first angler to claim and have ratified a record for a fish that wasn't killed.

As I said in my origonal post it was a different age.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Peter, RW was one of the first "travellers" He couldn't get to Redmire fast enough when he found out about the 30 that was caught there. Same reason a lot of people go to Wingham.

Can't speak for everyone but I don't think thats true. I could name 10 lakes close to me that hold bigger tench than Wingham its just I'd sooner poke my eyes out than fish some of them again.

For me Wingham is all about the peace, quiet and beauty and that sometimes you can be the only fisherman for miles!

I will answer three points in this one note.

Yes, in those days record and lesser fish were killed and set up. Indeed, that was the fate of Bob Richards 31.25lb record carp caught at Redmire Pool in 1951. In fact it was Dick who set the fish up after having to pick up the decomposing body from a railway station. Apparently the smell in his shed was nauseating when he was preparing the skin.

Dick was sick of the carp scene long before his death and said to several of us that had he known what was likely to transpire he would have done things differently.

As far as getting to Redmire just as quickly as he could is concerned. Yes, he was keen to get there and did so but only after being invited to to do so by Bob Richards. I believe that the invitation was extended to him at a Daily Mirror function at which prizes were given to anglers who had caught qualifying fish in the competiton the news paper held in those days.

I fished with Dick, Fred and Ken Taylor at Redmire, and in those days carp fishing had a mystery about it that was exciting and enjoyable. We also had fun and though we had a bell tent in case of really bad weather, there was no sitting for days in bivveys watching TV or crashing around the banks like some carp anglers do at the "Pay and catch" fisheries. Unfortunately I never caught a carp from Redmire, but I saw enough of the big ones to make my eyes pop.

Our carp sessions in those days where wonderful sessions that will live in my mind forever. I can't help feeling that although today's carp anglers catch more and bigger carp than we did, they don't get anywhere near the enjoyment from it all.

That also sums it up for me too. If you catch its a bonus and if you blank it is great just to be there. Wonderful place and long may it remain so.

To myself and many of my fishing mates at that time, anything about Redmire was read avidly and fired the imagination irrespective whether it was in your era or later under the stewardship of Jack Hilton or Tom Mintram. It created a picture in the mind of a place that was unreal and full of mystery to such an extent that I still retain that image and would never fish at Redmire even if the opportunity presented itself in case the illusion was shattered. Stupid maybe but I like to keep it that way and the mystery that once surrounded it.

And you are right mate.I fished there (admitedly in the Winter) and it ruined my fantasy.
