Should Carp have pet names?

Love it, thanks Chevin!

What do you think he would have made of the current carp scene? Or indeed, modern fishing in general?

It's difficult for me to say really because I have been out of the UK for so long and I am not really in touch with what is happening. I did visit your country in 2004 and when at Tring Reservoirs I saw two anglers who were in adjacent swims each catch carp of over twenty pounds. They were good fish by anyone's standards and Dick would have viewed them as such and yet there could have been no real sense of magic for the anglers concerned. There were people wandering about, others hammering rod rests into the bank and all manner of distractions. We used to approach our swims with stealth. Not a glimmer of light at night, cigarette ends shielded. We stepped lightly and when we caught carp it was an event. From what I saw in 2004 it was just an occurrance. Sad really, the kids who go out and catch twenty pounders as their first fish just don't know what they are missing and yet in reality it was Dick and his friends who set carp fishing on the path it has taken.

I wonder if the mistake was making it too easy to obtain the know-how and equipment?

More likely it was the stocking of every puddle between here and there with carp!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

I'll second the thanks. I love hearing about 'The Greats'.

Obviously I don't know what he would think of todays antics, but if I remember correctly, his views on the stocking of ready made specimen trout, weren't exactly favourable to say the least.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

And yet he fished for them...often. I entered into a discussion about the merits or otherwise about huge stocked trout in AT with Dick.

I hope somebody's taking notes, there's another good book in the making somewhere methinks!

Did he once catch a record brownie and refuse to claim because it was stocked at a record weight?

Or was it someone else, but RW argued against it standing as a record?

My memories a bit vague.

100% definately Steve.Kev Maddocks kiss and tell book "Carp Fever" blew the hole game apart. For the price of the book any one could instantly get information that had took years for us to get.It was almost a step by step guide!

Coupled to this baits/bait ingrediants were now avaiable from tackle shops and carp tackle was available "off the peg" in a lot of shops. This really enabled the "instant carper" to be born.It being these who in my mind changed the whole scene for the worse.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Should be passed down by word of mouth from teacher to apprentice, only when the apprentice is ready:
