We have just lost a very good friend.

Alan described Sonja as one of his best life choices. As in so many things, he was right.

I hope there's a cornmer of Heaven reserved for the 'Cod Squad' waiting for you.

This is a signature, there are many signatures like it but this one is mine

At a time of great sadness for Sonja i

hope she is able to recieve some comfort from all the messages posted on AN the compassion shown sums up how many people Alan's warmth touched.

A true gent who was always willing to chip in any advice he could and dedicated to this site and sport to the end.

even in times of his recent ill health he was always eager to help.

one of his final triumphs was a letter posted in this months Sea Angler P26

as below

Braid advice

I was very interested in the topic about loading a spool with braid.

I take my reel and spare spool to a tackle shop and get them to load say 150 metres of braid first. I also get them to load on the backing to the required height.

Now simply load the backing onto the reel as per your article and you should end up with no waste. From 300m you will have 150m left and 150m ready for action.

A similar method can be used for the remaining 150m but, as you know you have 150m left on the original spool, you can do this yourself at home. I use an empty bulk spool and a drill to reverse the braid and backing. A long nut and bolt through the spool secured in a vice does the trick of loading the braid then backing.

To wind the line onto the reel I use the butt section and pass the line through at least one ring of the rod for better control.

Can't stop the tears, we've all lost a very special friend. It's times like this that I hope with all my heart that there is a better place we go to when our time comes.

Alan, be proud, you left your mark on so many of us. You will be sorely missed, rest in peace fella.

Tons of hugs to Sonja, i'm very very sorry.

Someone has beaten me to it but I will post the whole poem,it gives me comfort at times like this perhaps it will others.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glint on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you wake in the morning hush,

I am the swift, uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circling flight.

I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there, I do not sleep.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there, I did not die!

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am the song that will never end.

I am the love of family and friend.

I am the child who has come to rest

In the arms of the Father who knows him best.

When you see the sunset fair,

I am the scented evening air.

I am the joy of a task well done.

I am the glow of the setting sun.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there, I do not sleep.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there, I did not die!

I too read Norries post whilst in a room full of people, and had to nip out sharpish!!!I too feel as if I have lost a member of my family,a good friend. It is lovely to read all the things people have written about Alan, they not only reflect the sort of person Alan was but also the "nice family " that is Anglers Net.I will of course send a card to Sonja from us all.If thats ok.

I too am crying as I type this in the office.

Will be thinking of Sonja

Rest In Peace Alan

I am very sad for me and for all those who knew Alan, be it in person or simply from postings and emails. It always hurts to lose one of the 'good guys'.

I think I can't be sad for Alan though since he is now done with a very bad patch. I've no idea what comes after but I am sure that he will get the very best of whatever it is.

I will greatly miss this man I never met in person.

Tog I had never seen that piece by Jack Burns before and thank you for posting it. I couldn't imagine a more fitting final send-off for an angler.

I never knew Alan but someone who could affect so many people must have been special.

My thoughts are with everyone who is affected by his death
