Just thought i'd bump this one back in to life as it now looks as winter will arrive early and with

a mighty bite

when you see this sort of chart being churned out it's time to sit up and take notice of the forecasts.yes i know its a week away and will change, but as anglers we all know to well how easy it is to get caught out by the weather

Met office has put out first warning for bad weather in north and northeast this will extend south over coming days..this could turn in to a 10 day very cold spell take heed and take care after all it's only a fish

http://forum.netweather.tv/index.php?app=c...ttach_id=105880

concentrate for the moment: feel. don't think.

Yep, it's all starting to get a bit interesting! Several days of very cold weather coming up, and a good chance of snow by the weekend. Lovely chubbley :)

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Looks like I will be donning the all thermal gear and heading out on the chub search on saturday again then. Might even catch one this time. You never know!

I'm expecting Andy_1984 to phone me to go deadbaiting anytime soon, which I'll grudgingly do, since everything else will have gone to sleep until at least June. We'll drive past 100s of perfectly good pike waters to go somewhere bonkers...usually my suggestion admittedly. Glutton for pinishment I guess. Andy will lazily put out one rod, even though I have 6 to choose from and always offer another setup at least. I'll put out 4 lamprey and brown trout as per usual. Andy will make roll-ups and food all day, while I, from the confines of my sleeping bag, predict 'a run any time soon', which normally waits till about 2pm till come true, some 8 hours after arrival, which I tell him is normally the case but means little. I'll catch some pike, which is jammy apparently, even though I have a 3 rod advantage. It will be freezing cold. I'll lose the will about 4pm and start fidgeting. Andy will persevere till I 'knowingly' pack up about 6pm. We'll trudge back to the car, which will inevitably have suffered some kind of malfunction during the day but that's OK. We're only 200 miles North of Glasgow and the locals all speak Gaelic....probably. Andy will fix the car eventually. The heaters will kick in about 3 miles from my house but that doesn't matter. I slept though most of the journey due to hypothermia. We arrange another session in February.

Dales, this is tench karma - take your medicine like a good boy! Get it out of the way, and you'll be catching again in no time :)

Blanking happens to the best of us... (with one exception on this board :) )

I'm actually not a very good angler so it also happens to the worst of us...

One winter I blanked on five of eight fishing trips. I don't remember catching any monsters on the other three trips that winter either...

But when I did catch something it was a wonderful feeling.

You'll catch again soon.

If fishing was too easy, the fun would soon disappear from it.

Think about what you are fishing for, consider what the fish might be thinking (food wise) then offer the food to the fish in a place that looks likely.

Best tips I can give anyone is read the Mr. Crabtree books, study the river and let the uppermost thought in your mind be (as a fish) minimum expense of effort (food store) maximum intake of food, fish light - very light. Forget about chasing the Specimen and the record until you can guarantee you will catch every time you go fishing. Consider your venues - if you are not catching, Why not?

Are you you crashing around the bankside?

Are you fishing too heavy?

Are you shotting up properly?

Have you plumbed the swim?

Did you remember to put the bait on the hook?

Are you fishing silhouetted against the skyline?

Is your ipod or whatever turned up too loud?

Are you spending too much time sending texts?

When throwing in loose feed are you throwing it in far enough up steam to do you good where you are fishing?

When throwing in groundbait are you throwing it in far enough up steam to do you good where you are fishing?

Are you casting so that a; your hook length and line does not tangle. - and - b; your float and cast gently land on the water

- and - c; your hookbait has time to sink to the chosen depth for your loose feed and/or groundbait.

Is your float right for the venue and the prevailing conditions?

Have you got too much float tip showing?

Is your set up balanced?

Are you really watching your float they don't always go under? Sometimes they just move differently to the flow or slower or faster.

EDIT:

Start loose feeding as soon as you arrive at the waterside,

Tackle up away from the fishes line of sight.

I am willing (health permitting) to go fishing with anyone if they think it will help them and I don't charge.

Problem is Rod, there are days when whatever I've done the fish just ain't feeding. The only possible method that I can think of catching them with a rod and line when it's like that is to foul hook them.

I know there are waters that I could take you to during the cold months and I'd guarantee you'd have your first ever blank :o;) . These waters are very hard during the summer months and totally fishless in the colder ones, they just shut down.
