What do you reckon to this one? Just desserts, or a bit OTT?

Ditto!

I think that the fisheries could pull their fingers out though. No permit without seeing the rod licence. No arguments then!

Seems fair to me, like worms I think that fishery owners could do more to insist that those fishing there waters have a licence. No licence no ticket.

If he had fished before, he obviously knew he needed one.

All,

Even over here you need two documents. One from the "lake pond boss" (if they charge a fee to fish) and a State Fishing License. We have no Federal licenses for pleasure fishing. The pond boss in NOT obligated to see to it you meet "state requirements", he just collects his money. We have VERY few lakes where you pay to fish and - surprise - surprise - - - they are called paylakes.

The guy may have "learned" something about getting caught - but I doubt his story about "not knowing".

When checking the club book I have to check the angler has a EA licence also. If they haven't got one then they leave the weater with a written warning. It's part of the club rules and people are told about it along with the other rules when they get a membership.

Personally I think the rod licence is a complete rip off and should be done away with !

Good point.

It is up to the EA to enforce the law, not to expect fishery managers or angling club members to do it for them. What next? a reward for dobbing defaulters in?

Why should a fishery manager be expected to turn away business? It is the angler's responsibility to check he is complying with the law. You wouldn't expect a television salesman to refuse to sell you a set unless you produced a TV licence. It's your own responsibility to get whatever licences you need (not me, I get free TV :P:P )

There are two ways to achieve such enforcement of fishing licences - either more EA staff, so there is a good chance of defaulters getting caught - or use fewer staff (and I have only seen two EA checking teams in seventy years of angling) , but impose a swingeing fine on those that do get caught pour encourager les autres. That is what seems to have happened in this case.

I would not want to see us finish up as a nation of busybodies, narks, quislings, informers and bounty-hunters.

Hi guys,

I had a thought on this? What if you were the owner of the lake? Of course judging by the EA's reply that anyone needs a licence to fresh water fish in the UK but if you were the owner could you refuse the EA bailiff entrance onto your property? ;-)

If so this could be a way round the problem, a very expensive way round yes but still a solution...buy a lake...
