As above i guess you will have to contact the Hierarchy at Abing/oxon aaa to see if they will give you written permission and then get your licence off the EA .

Ken,

EA is pretty clear on the subject. They don't address "when" you may trap crayfish. Logic dictates you could do it whilst fishing - but that is often absent in the regulations. Equally because Abingdon and Oxford Anglers Alliance is not the actual owner of adjacent (ripirian) land I'm not sure if your membership covers crayfish.

For sure, I'd start with the EA. I have copied and pasted from them the following:

"Crayfish Trap Guidelines

As you need our written consent to use a crayfish trap, it’s sensible to get permission from us before you buy. Make sure that the trap you buy is legal for crayfish trapping.

There are strict rules about the size and design. This is to protect other wildlife such as otters.

The entrance to the trap must be no more than 9.5 cm across

If the entrance is more than 9.5 cm across, there must be an otter guard or restriction on the funnel leading into the trap

The holes in the mesh must not be more than 3 cm across

The trap itself must not be more than 60 cm long or 35 cm wide

If you want to use a trap that does not comply with these rules, you will need written permission from us. Phone our National Customer Call Centre on 0370 8506506 and ask to speak to your local Fisheries Officer. We refuse many applications because of the risks to otters and water voles. These are protected species. Don’t break the law."

remember if you get a licence it will cover just one water ,each trap will need a label which will come with the licence ,using a trap without a label even with a licence is an offence ;)

overnight is the best time to catch them but with a nice bit of herring or sprat you should get some while your fishing but unless the water is seriously infested with them don't count on them for tea

its surprsing how many a water can hold with few signs of them ,occasionally one gets caught and most anglers at the pond dont know they are in there but i'm removing over 80 a week now ,with more traps (i am using 4 but have 10 labels) i could easily live on them if i could be bothered ,trouble is IMHO they are not worth the effort

80 a week Chesters?

Post 'em to me in an ice packed box and I'll refund you the postage and supply you with a few drinking vouchers mate, bloody delicious but fortunately only native whiteclaws near me

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

trouble is they are all sizes ,some missing claws ,strangely one trap when in a certain swim gets a fair few big ones missing one or two claws so possibly there is a super crayfish who beats the crap out of them but has the savvy to escape again :D

i cooked the first lot i caught but they were very muddy tasting ,i suppose by keeping them in clean water for a few days that would disappear but waiting to a fat bloke is a non starter i could drive to tesco and buy a box of burgers in a half hour! and be eating them in another

problems with sending live crays in the post i expect ;)
